Best hybrid and plug-in deals after 5 years of ownership

Kipplingers, Forbes, Intellichoice, Consumer Reports, US News & World Reports, etc. have all offered up best and most cost-effective vehicle lists in recent months, and it’s sometimes a little surprising the lack of consensus. Consequently, I’ve often wondered if there isn’t some sort of advertising-related objective.

Regardless, these lists are still interesting and usually useful for buyers, and the latest one comes from Kelly Blue Book. Read more…

Smart buy: Many hybrid cars are an Intellichoice

Hybrid car purchase aren't just green statements, they are smart financial moves.

GM's eAssist makes sense according to Intellichoice

Toyota dominates list of 2012 Best Values

You know the line. Hybrids just don’t add up. The hybrid premium isn’t made up for decades, long after the car has expired. Blah, blah, blah. Yet, over and over numerous forms of analysis regarding such trivial issues as cost of ownership find a lot of hybrid cars do make sense, financial sense.

The Intellichoice Best Values in 2012, for instance, concluded that 5 of the best 24 values were hybrid-only vehicles. Read more…

128.3 mpg in a hybrid: “That’s why I bought this thing”

128.3 mpg for 132 miles in a hybrid car. That's the story of Dave Perry's awesome hypermiling achievement.

The dash of Dave's hybrid

If only the rest of America thought the same about fuel economy

Hype. Image. PR. Image over all else. That’s largely the nature of our modern world these days. Maybe it has always been that way. Automakers, for instance, are geniuses at covering up their role in the terrible geopolitical and environmental mess the world finds itself in these days. But they’ve only been giving consumers what they want, right?

Except for people like Dave Perry. Rather than the normal American ride, Dave bought a hybrid to push the limits of gasoline-powered fuel efficiency, and boy did he ever. 128.3 mpg over the course of 132 miles. Read more…

Interesting pricing and great resale value, yet poor Honda hybrid sales

Honda's hybrid cars have offered some of the best resale value and best pricing in the hybrid segment, yet Honda's hybrid sales have lagged. 2012 will be a benchmark year for gauging Honda's hybrid mojo.

Can great resale value get Honda's hybrid cars back on track?

2 out 3 just ain’t good enough

Today, Honda doesn’t just offer the cheapest hybrid, but also the hybrid with the greatest resale value for 2012, yet Honda sales still got slammed last month.

Some of this lag in sales was caused by the launch of the 2012 Honda Civic hybrid as well as supply shortages caused by the Japanese earthquake this Spring. Nevertheless, something appears missing from Honda’s hybrid mojo. Read more…

A cheap hybrid vehicle purchase requires Insight

The Honda Insight hybrid is not the best hybrid, and the Toyota Prius is the better hybrid in almost all regards. However, when it comes to cost-effectiveness and costs of ownership, its very hard to beat the Insight hybrid.

If it's all about dollars, then its all about the Insight hybrid.

Honda keeps its focus on cost-effective fuel economy

These days, if you think fuel efficient automaker, you might think Toyota. Because of some recent plug-in launches, you might even think GM or Nissan. But it has been Honda that has perpetually offered some of the best fleet fuel economy in the US for many, many years.

And, when it comes to the cheapest, most cost-effective hybrid cars, it’s still about Honda. Read more…

2012 Honda Insight: Still Honda’s best hybrid

The 2012 Honda Insight will offer a few new looks, better aerodynamics and rear end visibility, plus better fuel economy, making the Insight hybrid Honda's best hybrid offering, at least in the US.

Honda's best US hybrid is getting better

At least in the US

Last week Honda teased a new picture and a few new details regarding its upcoming 2012 Honda Insight, at least the European version, although it is very likely most of these updates will also make it to the US.

While the changes aren’t significant, they should help resolve a few critical Insight issues, and keep the Insight positioned as Honda’s best hybrid offering in the US. Read more…

Nissan Leaf outselling all hybrids, except Toyota Prius

The Nissan Leaf outsold all hybrid cars, except the Toyota Prius. Can there be only one when it comes to hybrid cars, plug-in hybrid cars and electric vehicles?

The second best selling alternative powertrain vehicle in June.

Can there be only one hybrid, one plug-in hybrid and one EV?

The Toyota Prius has dominated hybrid sales forever. When it comes to hybrids, it really is the Prius and everything else, but nothing else really matters.

That doesn’t mean all other hybrid cars suck. There are great hybrids out there, such as the Ford Fusion hybrid or the Lexus CT 200h, just to name a few, but their sales make them almost irrelevant.

Consequently, the fact that the Nissan Leaf outsold all hybrids in June, except the Prius, is almost profound, almost. Read more…

Prius and Insight hybrids are back. Time to go shopping.

Toyota Prius and Honda Insight supplies are improving. You can start shopping Japanese hybrid cars again.

Hybrid shopping? You can find a Prius.

Japanese hybrid supplies improving

Had some errands to run this morning that took me near a number of auto dealerships, so I thought I’d check out the supply situation of Japanese hybrid cars, particularly the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight.

Sure supplies aren’t at the levels they were before gas prices spiked, but they are still the best I’ve seen in months. Read more…

Why isn’t the most cost-effective hybrid a better seller?

The Honda Insight hybrid is the cheapest to own hybrid vehicle, as well as one of the top 10 cheapest to own vehicles. So why are sales so sluggish?

Fuel economy just not worth the extra upfront costs?

The Honda Insight is one of the cheapest cars to own after 5 years

After 5 years, the Honda Insight hybrid is one of the Top Ten Cheapest Cars to own according to a recent Kipplinger report. Yet, in May, the Honda CR-Z hybrid – a two seater – outsold the Insight hybrid.

Why are sales for the most cost-effective hybrid and one of the most cost-effective vehicles available after 5 years so sluggish? What does this mean for the future of hybrid and plug-in vehicles? Read more…
