Study – Hybrids and plug-ins do reduce CO2 over life of vehicles

Battery production for plug-in vehicles is energy intensive, but over the life cycle, batteries make hybrids and plug-ins greener than conventional vehicles.

Hybrids and plug-ins are greener

Over the years many have suggested that battery powered cars are not really green because it takes more energy to produce such vehicles and this counters their reduced tailpipe emissions.

For years, Hybridcarblog has disagreed, citing a number of studies contradicting this dirty claim. And now there is a new study to support the greenness of hybrid and plug-in vehicles.

According to Ricardo, while hybrids and plug-ins do cause higher CO2 emissions during production, they still offer a lower CO2 footprint over the entire life cycle of these vehicles.

Still, the study demonstrates there is much room for improvement, and cites the growing use of renewable energy in the manufacturing of hybrids and plug-ins. Nevertheless, the idea that battery-powered vehicles are dirtier than conventional vehicles just isn’t supported by the science.
