Power your house for two days with a Nissan Leaf

Nissan Leaf battery packs could be used for commercial electrical storage systems by 2016. Until then, you can power your house with a Leaf for 2 days.

All about the battery pack.

Can electrical storage increase the value of electric cars?

Like most automakers developing plug-in cars, Nissan is exploring new ways of both powering electric vehicles as well as extending the life of lithium-ion battery packs in electric cars. Hence, Nissan is working with 4R Energy Corporation to develop solar-charging capabilities that use Nissan Leaf battery packs to store excess energy.

Since the Leaf’s battery pack can power a typical home for two days when fully charged, Nissan is hoping old batteries can become future Leaf chargers.

Even after the battery pack in a Leaf is no longer sufficient for automotive purposes, Nissan estimates that packs will still offer 80 percent of original capacity. Rather than recycling the batteries into new packs, it might be more cost-effective to first use the packs to store energy, as Nissan is currently doing at its Yokohama headquarters.

If all goes well, Nissan and 4R will begin offering a commercial product by 2016.
