Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt both very safe

The Nissan Leaf, like the Chevy Volt, is a top safety pick according to the NHTSA.

Plug-ins are safe. Period.

Safety not a reason to avoid plug-in vehicles

Today, the Nissan Leaf joined the Chevy Volt as NHTSA 5-star cars. Likewise, both plug-in vehicles have earned Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Complain about costs or range, but safety certainly isn’t a reason not to buy a plug-in vehicle.

For years, the safety concerns of hybrid cars were also a concern for some buyers, but hybrids — and their battery packs — have proven to be safe thus far, and the same seems true of plug-in hybrids and plug-in electrics.

If anything, what these tests seem to prove is that automakers can produce extremely safe small cars, if they want. Large gas-guzzlers aren’t the only thing that can keep a family safe.
