ie:3 – Low profiling the plug-in
The potential of Johnson Controls new low profile battery pack
Alright, at first glance the Johnson Controls ie:3 concept isn’t all that exciting. It’s just another small electric vehicle. Yet, where is the battery?
Under the floor, leaving tons of space for seating and cargo, even in a compact vehicle.
That’s the potential of Johnson Control’s new low profile lithium-ion battery pack that will be ready for automotive production in 2015, as will the ie:3 concept itself, if any automakers are interested in collaboration.
With JC’s new low profile battery pack, the battery maker wanted to demonstrate that small electric cars don’t have to feel small or lack reasonable cargo space. Using flip up stadium seats that can fold into the floor in the back for extra cargo space, JC was able to reduce weight, increase passenger room and provide an option for a significant increase in cargo capabilities when needed.
Additionally, JC stipped down the audio system to save even more weight, resulting in a headliner with integrated audio system.
No, the ie:3 concept isn’t going to woo large SUV fans, but making efficient, small cars feel much bigger than they really are might get some SUV fans to rethink small vehicles, especially if gas prices top $5.00 per gallon. And for small car fans, small is set to become even more compelling.
