Honda’s new hybrid a good Fit for the US
Honda needs some new US hybrid mojo
The $19,000 Honda Fit hybrid has been launched as the cheapest hybrid in Japan where sales of hybrid cars dwarf US sales thanks to tax incentives and, until recently, subsidies. Still, the conventional Fit is the second best selling vehicle in Japan.
If Honda can afford to cannibalize Fit and Insight hybrid sales in Japan with the Fit hybrid, why not in the US?
Honestly, Insight hybrid sales have been disappointing, and Civic hybrid sales are on life support. The CR-Z hybrid is only a two seat vehicle. Thus, if a Fit hybrid can double Honda’s total US hybrid sales, how can they afford not to bring the Fit hybrid?
In recent months, Honda’s US reputation has suffered some serious bruises. Thus, Honda’s cheapest and most fuel efficient hybrid belongs in the US. Honda needs to hit back and save some face.
