Ford Focus EV comes in priced at $39,995
Can Ford’s new EV compete with the Nissan Leaf?
The new 2012 Ford Focus plug-in electric will be offered for $39,995 when it hits limited dealerships later this year, particularly in California, New York and New Jersey.
But with a price tag $5000 higher than the Nissan Leaf, can the Focus electric compete?
Unfortunately, the EPA has not yet rated the Focus EV, but Ford believes EV range should come in at 100 miles. If that number holds up, it could give the Focus an EV range advantage compared to the Leaf’s 73 miles.
Likewise, the Focus EV can be charged quicker than the Leaf using a 240 Volt charging station, although Nissan will be adding this capability when Nissan Leaf production moves to the US.
Still need to spec out these two vehicles to see how they match up, but the $5000 Leaf pricing advantage seems a high hurdle for Ford to leap.

I agree, Smurf. But this isn’t surprising. Ford has taken the same approach on hybrids, over-pricing.
If Ford’s EPA rated fuel economy comes in at 100 miles, then I might reconsider a bit, but this is “disappointing”.
This is disappointing…..
The Ford Focus followed the same pattern as the Volt and Prius Plug-in. When the actual price finally is released, it turns out to be much higher than we were led to believe….
Estimates had the Focus EV coming in around $30K or at least the same price range as the Nissan Leaf.
Focus EV pricing is closer to the Volt than the Leaf.
When deciding on the Volt, I considered waiting for the Focus EV because I thought it would be $10K less. I’m glad I didn’t do that now….
