EV leader? Chinese hybrid buses break down with AC on

Is China really ready to lead the plug-in revolution when consumers aren't buying vehicles and Chinese hybrid buses break down if the AC is used?

Just don't use the AC

Is China really ready to lead the battery revolution?

A few years ago, particularly just after Warren Buffett bought a huge stake in BYD, I believed that China was on the verge of battery-powered domination. Since China already mined lithium and rare earths, built lithium-ion battery packs, and had access to hordes of scientists and cheap labor, how could China not be the big winner?

Today, however, BYD is tanking, consumers aren’t buying hybrids or plug-ins, and Chinese hybrid buses can’t even use their air-conditioners.

While hybrid buses have been a bit of a success story for the Chinese battery industry, the buses will break down if the air conditioning is left on, demonstrating there are many kinks left to work out.

Outside of buses, however, consumers just aren’t buying any new energy vehicles, and many dealers have yet to sell even 1 alternative energy vehicle to private consumers.

Guo Konghui, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, “said the development of new energy vehicles is still at an exploratory stage, even in developed countries,” a sentiment echoed by others.

“From a global point of view, the battery problem is an obstacle that will be hard to hurdle for the new energy vehicle sector,” Nigel Clark, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the United States’ West Virginia University, said during the Changchun auto show.
