Many hybrids are class leaders
OK. It’s not that big a deal that Kiplinger’s best car values for 2011 includes a number of hybrid vehicles as most fuel efficient vehicles in their segment for fuel economy. Big whoop, right? That’s what’s expected from hybrid cars.

Hyundai Sonata hybrid cheapest hybrid sedan
And it’s lithium powered
As has been speculated for some time on this blog, the upcoming 2011 Hyundai Sonata hybrid will be the cheapest hybrid sedan when it goes on sale in January, undercutting both the Toyota Camry hybrid and the Ford Fusion hybrid.
Starting at $26,545 including a $750 destination charge, according to InsideLine, the Sonata hybrid will be the cheapest hybrid sedan, but maybe not for long. Read more…

Buick LaCrosse foreshadows GM’s latest hybrid effort
eAssist defines GM’s lithium-powered mild hybrids
When GM killed its BAS mild hybrid powertrain, found in vehicles like the Chevy Malibu and Saturn Vue hybrids, the company promised an upgraded mild hybrid powertrain that would use lithium. The first taste of that new hybrid powertrain has been revealed.
The 2012 Buick LaCrosse hybrid will use a 4-cylinder engine coupled with its new lithium-powered hybrid powertrain, so far called eAssist, to achieve 25/37 mpg city/highway. Read more…

Hyundai’s first hybrid almost here
When the Hyundai Sonata hybrid goes on sale later this year, it will qualify for a $1300 tax credit according to Kicking Tires.

This morning Hyundai provided a technical presentation on the upcoming 2011 Hyundai Sonata hybrid, as well as the 2.0 Turbo version, while also offering a bit of a road map for the future of Hyundai.

Cheaper than the Sonata hybrid
The upcoming Kia Optima hybrid, expected to hit dealerships sometime in 2011, will debut at the LA Auto Show. Unfortunately, not much new information is available.
Ultimately, the Kia versus Hyundai hybrid pricing question is still the real story here, and that story has yet to be told.

Sedans aren’t the biggest sellers when it comes to hybrid cars. However, if hybrids are to ever achieve more than 3 percent market penetration, then sales of hybrid sedans will probably have to increase significantly.

Later this year Hyundai will begin rolling out its first hybrid vehicle, the Sonata hybrid, but that should be just the beginning of Hyundai’s hybrid story.
