Honda CR-Z hybrid

Honda CR-Z: The tuner’s hybrid

Honda CR-Z hybrid's future based around tuners and modifications with a Mugen modified CR-Z hybrid already set for this Spring.

Can hybrid tuning spark an increase in hybrid sales?

Mugen and other CR-Z hybrid modifications key to CR-Z sales?

Last month Honda sold 1,419 CR-Z hybrids, which isn’t too bad for a two-seat hybrid vehicle. Nevertheless, since the CR-Z hybrid is just hitting the market, it’s not hard to wonder whether such sales figures are sustainable.

The answer to that question might have been found at the SEMA show where modified CR-Z hybrids took center stage. Read more…

Toyota Supra hybrid on deck?

The Toyota Supra hybrid could be upcoming, but will the Supra still be a hybrid?

The FT-HS hybrid at NAIAS

Toyota seeks trademark on Supra name

Back when Toyota debuted the FT-HS hybrid at the North American Auto Show in 2007, company reps were pretty sure this hybrid sports car would go into production as the new Supra, and over the next couple years such a hybrid seemed a done deal.

Then the economy tanked and so did plans for this hybrid. Now, the Supra is back. Read more…

Honda’s new hybrid a good Fit for the US

The Honda Fit is the second best selling car in Japan, where Honda sells all its other hybrids. Thus, if it works in Japan, it works in the US.

Hybrids all about Japan, not US?

Honda needs some new US hybrid mojo

The $19,000 Honda Fit hybrid has been launched as the cheapest hybrid in Japan where sales of hybrid cars dwarf US sales thanks to tax incentives and, until recently, subsidies. Still, the conventional Fit is the second best selling vehicle in Japan.

If Honda can afford to cannibalize Fit and Insight hybrid sales in Japan with the Fit hybrid, why not in the US? Read more…

CR-Z hybrid and the irrational exuberance of America

The Honda CR-Z demonstrates that American consumers embrace waste and inefficiency while imposing illogical demands on automakers.

Perfect for every day commuters.

A bad omen for plug-ins?

As the Honda CR-Z hybrid makes it way to dealerships, a number of reviewers have remarked how unappreciated will be Honda’s latest hybrid. It’s just not made for Americans.

In a market defined by waste, the CR-Z hybrid just makes too much sense.

Much cheaper Honda hybrids coming soon?

In some markets, Honda is preparing to drop the price difference between its hybrid cars and comparable conventional cars. Might the US be the next market for such a move?

Coming soon, the $15,000 Honda hybrid?

Honda’s renewed mission to again own fuel economy

For a very long time, Honda has offered the most fuel efficient fleet of vehicles in America. Recently, however, other automakers have moved much closer to matching Honda’s fuel efficiency. In fact, Hyundai even surpassed Honda recently.

Honda CR-Z: Sporty hybrid ready to zip in August

Is the Honda CR-Z hybrid sporty enough, fuel efficient enough? That depends upon whom you ask.

Less fuel efficient, but more sporty?

Can – should – a hybrid be sporty?

Honda has announced that the Honda CR-Z hybrid will go on sale August 24 in the US. While final pricing hasn’t officially been announced, the base model should begin at just under $20,000 and top out at $24,000 for the higher end of three trim levels.

But, we’ve already known those specs. What we really want to know is, what does it mean to be a sporty hybrid? Can a hybrid be sporty? Should a hybrid be sporty? Read more…

Luxury, smuxury. Sporty hybrids set to fuel change

Sporty hybrids like the Toyota FT-HS hybrid could provide the kind of sizzle that moves hybrids from niche vehicles into the mainstream.

The FT-HS at the Detroit Auto Show

Some sizzle for hybrid cars

Hybrid cars aren’t cheap, and most hybrid models available are either high end or luxury models. In fact shopping for a luxury hybrid is a lot more interesting than shopping for a more cost-effective hybrid. There’s just more choices from more brands, with many more luxury hybrids, including plug-ins, on the way.

Unfortunately, the killer cheap hybrids are almost certainly coming, but just not yet, and possibly not for several more years. In the interim, sporty hybrids seem to be the next trend, and while that won’t significantly increase overall hybrid sales or market penetration, sporty hybrids could provide the kind of sizzle hybrids and electric vehicles need for serious market share.
