August a key month for the Chevy Volt
Getting Volt production back on line
Let’s be frank. Chevrolet Volt production through 2011 has been unimpressive. Fortunately, much of this disappointing sale’s data was planned.
However, while GM didn’t produce any Volts in June in order to upgrade manufacturing capabilities, in the next few days new and more robust manufacturing capabilities should kick into gear.
Consequently, if all cylinders are firing, August should provide the best month of Volt sales so far. If not, then there are still kinks in the production chains.
To date GM has sold 2,745 Volts, but by the end of the year that number should spike to 16,000 Volts, although only 10,000 of these Volts are intended for consumers. That should mean an average of more than 1000 Volt sales per month starting in August.
Sure, those aren’t stellar numbers compared to the conventional auto industry, nevertheless, the numbers demonstrate that production capabilities are improving, and that will be critical to scale. And scale will be critical to cheaper prices and greater sales.

While the production numbers are important, I think the sales numbers are also important. When the Volt is available nationwide, we’ll get a better handle on how it will sell…..
I think Jan. 2012 is also a key date. That is when we get the sales numbers for the first month after the Volt is available nationwide.
The Volt is still only available in 5 states, with 4 more in August, and 4 more in September. That still leaves 37 states that it won’t be available in until November.
