Would VMT hurt hybrid sales?
Killing the gas taxIn 2008 there was a $140 billion budget shortfall in highway funding that helped crunch many state budgets, and the problem is only expected to worsen as new CAFE requirements take effect.
Thus, many states and the Feds are considering a move away from a gas tax to a Vehicles Miles Traveled tax.
Since a good chunk of the price of gasoline goes to taxes, hybrid vehicles and plug-ins can avoid a large percent of this tax compared to other vehicles. However, a VMT tax would take away this advantage.
Would a VMT tax hurt hybrid and plug-in sales?

If the government keeps pushing the people, it will eventually cause a breakdown of society. They tax and tax and tax until individual liberties, property, wealth, etc. are going to disappear. People will try to vote out the politicians, but the system has become so corrupt that it may fall into total chaos before it rights itself. Remember the American Revolution was fought over excessive taxation.
In terms of gas taxes, you can't really call US taxes excessive, can you? Comparatively speaking, our gas taxes are extremely low.
Don't get me wrong. I hear and understand your point.
Moreover, in this case, the VMT isn't a new tax, although I'm sure the switch would invite rethinking how much tax must be collected. Nonetheless, the VMT is simply a different way of collecting the same revenues, and some revenues must be collected to maintain and build infrastructure, right?
Anonymous: Then stop driving so that our government doesn't have to build and maintain roads! Pretty simple if you don't want to keep paying taxes, stop using things that require our government to build. We could privatize all the roads and then the cost would increase considerably considering that gas taxes only cover 69% of roadway funding. 30.1% comes from other funding sources. The other funding sources are most typically general tax revenue.
