Chevy Volt heads to China next year
Ready to take on BYDGM continues to ramp up its Chinese investments, and the automaker plans to double that amount of models it sells in China over the next few years.
One of the first new vehicles to hit China will be the Chevy Volt, which will launch late this year in the US, followed by the Chinese launch in 2011.

How is the Volt going to compete with the BYD which is manufactured in China. Something is not right here.

Will GM build some volts in china? GM will build volts/volt twins in a few countries, right?

I'd agree that there is no doubt that BYD has an advantage, but BYD is still finding its legs as an automaker. Thus, for the next 5 years or so, I'd say that GM has some EV opportunities, particularly considering the outstanding success they have had in China.

for sure they are going to build the opel version in europe. that's a done deal, and GM has alluded to the possibility of other variants as demand increases in new markets.
based on GM's chinese success and their battery lab in that country - not to mention chinese policies - a Voltecs manufacturing facility in china can't be far behind if GM is serious about tapping the EV market in china.
likewise, if i'm not mistaken, a voltec buick concept is already being developed as a potential chinese product, which makes a ton of sense considering Buick's chinese rep.
over the years i've heard much speculation about how manufacturing the volt in China would be much more profitable for GM than US manufacturing.
obviously, GM made some deals with the UAW to keep at least some Volt production in the US, but according to many speculators, chinese-made volts - or at least Volts made with significant amounts of Chinese-maunfactured parts, such as the battery pack - and sold in the US wouldn't be that shocking in another decade or so.
