Luxury hybrids gone crazy
Well, I guess it's greenDang, has the selection of hybrid cars increased significantly in just the last few days. Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari have all confirmed plans to produce new hybrid vehicles.
Of course, those were just some of the top end hybrids, Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Infinity, for instance, also announced new hybrids during the course of the Geneva Motor Show.
But do any of these hybrids really mean anything in terms of advancing hybrid technology to the masses?
Sure, rich people can keep their rich toys and sleep soundly at night knowing that they have reduced their carbon footprint a bit. Unfortunately, however, even if you combine all these hybrids and their sale's potential, they still don't offer any scale for bringing hybrid vehicle costs down for the rest of us.

New technology has historically earned its stipes in high-end vehicles, and later adopted into mainstream vehicles as costs come down.
I keep saying that hybrid is the 21st century turbocharger.
Building a bunch of high-end hybrids for rich people may not have any significant impact on oil consumption, but it does help to further the developement of the technology.....

"Rich Guy" hybrids usually don't bother me, even though I don't really see the point of buying $100k cars at all. It only bothers me when the Federal government takes the taxes I paid and hands it over to someone making ten times as much as I make so that he/she can get a huge tax credit on their car purchases.
That is a good point.
Will these high-end hybrids qualify for a tax credit until they sell 60,000 of them? I suspect that they will the way the current law is written.
...and if any of these hybrids adds a plug, the incentive goes up to $7500.
More proof that our gov't needs to modify it's tax credits for hybrids and EV's...
