Toyota Auris hybrid ready to hit the EU
Coming this SpringThe new Toyota Auris hybrid will make its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and the production-ready hybrid will go on sale throughout Europe later this Spring.
Not many details on the new Auris hybrid are yet available, but Toyota did reiterate its plans to have hybrids across its entire lineup by 2020. And, while the new Auris hybrid is not intended for the US market, it is a step towards the new compact hybrid cars that Toyota has planned for the US market some time next year.

So long as the brakes, accelerator and steering work, I might consider buying one if and when it comes to the US. On a sidenote, it will be interesting to see how all of the recent recalls affect Toyota sales in the US. It's a shame that their aren't other automotive companies with enough hybrid capacity to take advantage of Toyota's misfortune, not that I wish bad things on Toyota. Just that competition is a good thing for consumers.
i know exactly what you mean. it seems to me that if ford had a prius-challenger right now, it would be impossible to keep it in stock.
This is ridiculous...by 2020? 10 years from now? Forget it....
The more I think about it, the more I realize I'm putting my life on hold for nothing.
Noz, Noz, surely it's not that bad. Sooner than 2020 there will be other choices besides Toyota. At least I hope so......... We are a passionate bunch aren't we.
Honestly I wouldn't call it passionate....just sick and tired of hearing the same bullshit from the same manufacturers using the same excuses to delay and delay and delay.
Honestly, look how quickly the military companies make the weapons that kill or the construction companies erect buildings in Las Vegas when there's money to be had.
The rest is bullshit...we're being taken for a ride bigtime.
Thats great news.
i pretty much agree with your pessimism, noz. even worse, that's only toyota. no other automaker has expressed any plan nearly as ambitious, so it's even worse than you think.
so, what kind of campaign can we start to fight against this?
Frankly at this point, I'd rather just change my lifestyle than wait for changes made by these idiots.
I'd rather move to a more ecocentric, walkable city. If I could dump the car entirely starting TODAY, I wouldn't even think twice. I'd not even sell my current car...just take it to a recycling yard and donate it as scrap for recycling.
That's how fed up I am with all this bullshit.
I know what you mean, Noz. Thanks to the Goldline I can go weeks without driving and I never miss it. In fact, I usually hate having to drive and I know you know how crappy are LA drivers!
The whole American car culture really has gone totally insane. It simply doesn't make sense, even if you add a plug. The vehicles are just way too big and wasteful for 98 percent, at least, of our needs.
When it comes to the automobile we're still cavemen.

"The whole American car culture really has gone totally insane."
So true...
In a conversation I had the other day with co-workers, a collegue of mine said he had to have a truck to haul all his kids and the groceries. When I asked him about his 2nd vehicle being more of a commuter car, he said.... "My second vehicle needs to do everything my primary vehicles does in case my primary vehicle goes in the shop".
At that point I stopped asking stupid questions...
This once again reiterates the American belief that "every vehicle has to do 100% of the things you need it to, and 100% of the things you might ever want it to do."
Smurf,
Well said. I don't know if any of you frequent other blogs like Autoblog but if you do, you'll get an accurate picture of the general self-centered attitude people have about themselves and their lifestyles in this country. There are so SERIOUSLY big-time douchebags and troglodytes frequenting that site.
After much soul searching and observations, I've come to the conclusion that there is a DIRECT link between how people behave, what they buy, what they do, and their self confidence and egos.
Anyone who denies this link is fooling themselves. There are always exceptions to the rule BUT for the most part, you can hit the mark about a person's insecurities and personalities when looking at what they drive and HOW they drive.
This culture is so insecure, so pampered, so needy. People in the US have this blatant attitude of self-righteousness...this belief that everything they have and do is a God given right. This spills over directly into how they act, what they own, what they drive, how they treat others.
Couple this with marketing that constantly bashes the most insecure people on the planet over the head with fear mongering about "YOU NEED THIS, YOU NEED THAT, YOU NEED IT TO BE BIGGER, FASTER, TALLER, STRONGER...."...what do you end up with???
I'll tell you what...you got to a restaurant and you get portions the size of your head. You get a culture fatter than everyone else around the world. You get a culture that thinks getting 15 MPG and having 7 seats in a car is a necessity...just in case. You get a culture that thinks having 200 HP in a car is lame and weak. You get a culture that has everyone looking over their shoulder with paranoia and fear about anything and everything. You get a culture that constantly has the weight of war and fighting and killing having over their heads.
Is it any wonder people in the US are completely stressed out and frazzled subconsciously?
No, Noz, there isn't. Great line of thought. I think you really hit a bunch of nails on the head.
America needs a cultural revolution.
From a culture of entitelment to a culture of social, econmic, conservation and moral responsibility.
hopefully.
