Sportier, faster CR-Z hybrid also in the works

Honda CR-Z hybrid will also come in a souped up 200 hp version as well.Aiming for 200 hp

Early reviews of the upcoming Honda CR-Z hybrid have often included phrases like 'not quite as fast as expected'. Consequently, Honda is planning to bring a high performance version of the CR-Z hybrid to market as well.

According to reports, the new CR-Z hybrid will increase the 113-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine closer to 150 hp and replace the 14-horsepower electric motor with a 50-horsepower motor to achieve a total of 200 hp.

Likewise, the the sportier CR-Z hybrid will offer a stiffer suspension and stronger brakes as well as a few body modifications.

Just more proof that Honda is the Japanese version of GM. How about those of us that are complaining the the mileage for the new CR-Z is abysmal? I love the Chevy commercials that tout better gas mileage than Honda and Toyota for the same class vehicles. We're talking a few MPG difference. How about a 50% to 100% difference instead???? Foreign oil dependency, greenhouse gasses???? Not many people care, I guess. Lets just continue burying our heads in the sand. Noz got me going with this depressed thinking. ;-}

Tell me about it. When it comes to the auto industry there is so little to be optimistic about most of the time.

Like most hardcore addicts, only force will change our bad guzzling habits it seems.

Personally I'm a fan of this little car. I think that in future generations the hybrid element that is emerging will result in some pretty fun cars with all kinds of new features. The CR-Z is probably one of my favorite hybrids I've seen aesthetically.

I am currently working with a team to transform a 2009 Saturn Vue into a Hybrid for the Challenge X Ecocar competition, and I must say that the challenges and design options are endless. For more information feel free to check out our website:

Well, don't get me wrong. I find the manual version of this hybrid to be interesting and I'm very much looking forward to a drive.

Still, we need much more if we are to mainstream hybrids.

If Honda were coming out with a 60 mpg city hybrid and the CR-Z, we'd be all cheers on this blog.

robby-d,
I believe that with a more power motors (both gas and electric), it can be actually MORE fuel efficient.

i like the 6-speed manual version of this vehicle as well. for those interested in serious hypermiling, i think the manual CR-Z will provide an interesting option.

It's only my opinion, but the CR-Z is not the car I had hoped Honda would produce. I like the sporty looks, but does every sporty car, especially one that's touted as a hybrid, have to throw fuel economy out the window. Just how good will the mpg be with hypermilling when the currently published mpg for the CR-Z is well under 40 mpg? I think Honda has gone backwards in fuel economy when you look at its very first Insight. I also fail to see how more power is going to make the car more fuel efficient. In all sincerity, I'd really like that one explained to me. All of this, coming from someone who has owned Hondas for close to 20 years and, I might say, I'd buy another one if I don't buy a Ford Fusion Hybrid first.
