Hyundai ready for plug-in hybrid leadership in 2012
Based off of Blue Will architectureIn addition to announcing that Hyundai is "accelerating" its efforts into hybrid cars, despite being late to the hybrid game, Hyundai also confirmed that it will begin offering plug-in hybrids in 2012.
Hyundai's first hybrid will be the Sonata hybrid later this year.
Despite Hyundai's late hybrid arrival, the automaker believes it could become a real leader in plug-in hybrid technology. No new details on Hyundai's plug-in plans outside of the Blue Will plug-in concept were offered, however, Hyundai did acknowledge today that they believe 20 miles of EV range is the right number for plug-in hybrids.

Hybrids will take off when you can buy one for about the same price as an similarly-equipped non hybrid.
and this will require a different, smaller ICE engine to mate with the electric engine.
so the trade-off will be on a smaller ..wimpier performing car that gets better gas mileage verses a more robust engine car for about the same price but worse gas mileage.
I live in a virtual bedroom community where a significant number are daily commuters who use an interstate to make a round trip approaching one miles a day.
The only reason most folks buy hybrids is because they have until now got preferential treatment on the HOV lanes.
If that goes away.. I'm not sure what the advantage a hybrid will have over a "beater" that gets pretty good mileage - a conventional ICE that gets 30-40 mpg without being a hybrid and costing more.
