Flowing in Hyundai's 78 mpg hybrid
Only for Europe? Here's the latest sketch of the Hyundai i-flow diesel hybrid concept. The i-flow hybrid is powered by a 1.7-liter turbodiesel, six-speed dual-clutch transmission, coupled with an electric motor and a lithium-ion-polymer battery.
Interestingly, outside of European automakers, there has been little interest in diesel hybrid cars. Sure, there have been concepts, such as the Ford Reflex, but this new Hyundai diesel hybrid appears to be the real deal.
And the pieces of Hyundai's hybrid puzzle are beginning to piece together a pretty interesting picture.

I really do hate to be the pesimist, but the Honda CR-Z was ONCE an interesting and promising hybrid. Now that it's coming to fruition, it's not nearly as promising as it once was. I hope the same thing doesn't happen to the Hyundai. I wish the CR-Z was going to get 78 mpg.
No doubt, the CR-Z is a lot less exciting than it once was.
At least in terms of Hyundai, they are working with full hybrid technology, and they seem to believe that they can help scale down the costs of their lithium battery technology in conventional hybrid cars, and not just plug-in hybrids and EVs.
That alone is very interesting and relatively unique in the hybrid segment.
According to a number of experts, Hyundai might have one of the smartest production systems in place for lithium battery pack production.
If that can translate into hybrid cars that are as cost-competitive to NiMH, then Hyundai might be able to give Toyota a real run for the money in 4 or 5 years, as it will take some time to scale out production capabilities I'm sure.
In fact, it might give Hyundai a short term advantage.
