Scion hybrids coming next year

Scion IQ hybrid coming in 2011 for $15,000.$15,000 hybrids coming soon

InsideLine is reporting that Toyota's new dedicated hybrid that is to debut at the North American International Auto Show is going to be a new Scion IQ hybrid.

The first IQ hybrid will be a 5-door hatchback, however, a sedan and 3-door versions are also expected.

Fuel economy is expected to be more than 60 mpg and pricing is expected to come in at about $15,000 when the new hybrids launch in 2011.

This makes a perfect commuter car or first car! Wow.

60 MPG. Game over.

Every eco-conscious high schooler will be begging for one. Smart commuters who know that smaller and lighter are the future for single person driving will seriously consider one.

I agree. This is a really big deal.

60+ mpg for $15,000 with Scion's unique and interesting styling.....I'm very interested to watch this development unfold.

I think a common and accurate complaint is that American's don't like to buy small cars because small cars don't seem to provide value. What is the advantage of a small car when you can get a bigger one?

60 MPG provides the answer to that question, IMHO. If you want 60 MPG you can only get that in this small car. Period.

All of a sudden there is a positive reason to get a small car. You are getting something more not just less with that small car. More gas savings, more environmental friendliness, basically everything that the Prius was providing that was of unique value.

The Prius beats the Insight because of MPG, IMHO. This Scion will beat the Prius for that same reason.

I agree. This is a big deal.

We on this blog have been screaming for small hybrids in the belief that they would get 60 mpg.

It looks like we really are getting into the second decade of hybrids.

Just like a lot of technologies, the first decade is dominated by a few top brands at higher costs. As you get into the second decade more brands are available and costs come down....

The iQ Hybrid will be offered as both a five-door hatchback and as a sedan, with the hatch going on sale in 2011. Impressively, it will get over 60 mpg thanks to a 1.5-liter engine used as a part of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy drive.

and that tata hybrid isn't as outlandish an idea as it sounds.

tata has already been working on hybrids, and it will release a hybrid via fiat india - a partnership between fiat and tata - next year.

"All of a sudden there is a positive reason to get a small car." - very perceptive point, alcatholic.

today's auto show hasn't exactly confirmed a scion hybrid, but it hasn't dismissed it either.

more important, today's auto show has confirmed there will be cheaper hybrids.

still, here's my question based off today's detroit auto show events: can there be a scion 'prius'?
