Hyundai's "practical hybrid solutions" near
The Blue Will hybrid conceptNo, it doesn't look like a Hyundai. And some out right hate the face of this vehicle.
That's OK, it's just a concept. Like some hot new BCBGMAXAZRIA meant only for Fashion Week, the styling of the Hyundai Blue Will Hybrid Concept is simply a stylistic direction, or a "perfect expression to the advanced eco-friendly technologies found beneath the skin," notes Oh Suk-Geun, executive vice president of design for Hyundai.
And, it's what's under the skin that really matters, right?
Under the Blue Will's skin is an exciting new hybrid powertrain, a lithium-polymer powered hybrid drive that mates a 100 kWh motor to Hyundai's new 152-hp 1.6L directed injected four cylinder-engine. Using lithium, Hyundai is providing a battery that is 30% lighter, 50% smaller and 10% more efficient than the NiMH batteries found in today's hybrids.
Unlike the skin, however, this new hybrid powertrain isn't just a concept.
Later this year, according to MotorTrend, a very similar hybrid powertrain will be coming to the US in the form of the Sonata hybrid as the first example of "practical hybrid solutions that will appear on the next generation of [Hyundai] vehicles."

gawd o' mighty.. WTF.. who would design a car that looks like that - on purpose?
that fella had to be smoking something - that was not good for you.
Its not a production vehicle. Little pieces of the design will influence other Hyundai vehicles.
I really like my Hyundai Elantra but this thing needs to be put in a car crusher.
I agree with Larry G; the design team must have also been hitting the bottle before the design was done.
So, they shouldn't make this a production vehicle?!
Change up the grill and this design doesn't bug me. Its all about aerodynamics.
Still, its what's under the skin that matters most, and that's what's most interesting about this concept.
I actually thought the design was very Hyundish with the exception of the front. It seems obvious to me that the blandness of the front grill is due to the preliminary nature of the design. Let's see how it develops before we throw the whole thing out. I also agree with Dahcredyns. What's under the skin is of primary importance. But even so, the skin does matter to all of us "aesthetic neophites".
I am sure I should hate this car too, but I have surprised myself by rather liking the way it looks.
Plus, what it has under the bonnet sounds pretty impressive!

So, Larry and Tom, since you hate this design so much, I wonder what you think of the Prius design?
Why mate this battery system to such a large engine?
I like the Prius.... but the original Insight is a bit funky but this car is in a class by itself.
Dahcredyns said.[in part] So, Larry and Tom, since you hate this design so much, I wonder what you think of the Prius design?
Well I didn't exactly say I hated the design - I just thought it should be placed in a crusher LOL. I guess that's about the same isn't it LOL
What I dislike the most about the Hyundai design is what I like most about the Prius. Aerodynamics my friend, aerodynamics.
The front of the Prius slopes down to the road and airflow slips over the hood and roof. The closer some manufacturer gets to a vehicle looking like an Aptera the better I will like it.
Also it seems to me that ever since Hyundai moved the design center to CA they have been trying to copy the front end of a Mazda. The darn front end looks like it has a bunch of sharp corners and gaping holes which must be about a aerodynamic as a brick.
What good will it do to create a vehicle that gets 50 mpg if no one wants to drive one? Normally, us guys already know what's under the hood of the car when we go shopping anyway. What we really want are people to say - now that's a nice looking car?
Ask your wife or girlfriend if she thinks it's a hot car? Yes I know it's a prototype LOL.
Tom G.
Fair enough, Tom. I might have guessed that you would hate the Prius design.
