GM increases large SUV production
When will this be a plug-in?GM is adding an extra shift to increase its large SUV production due to an increase in demand for these vehicles. Unfortunately, the far majority of this demand will not be for the much more fuel efficient hybrid versions of these SUVs.
In a country where the gas-guzzling Ford F-Series has dominated US auto sales for decades, and SUV interest is increasing just a couple of years after $4.00 gas, it's obvious that the small, hybrid and plug-in revolution has a ways to go in America.
Isn't it ironic, however, that only increased gas prices can reverse this trend, yet current gas taxes are insufficient to fund the basic maintenance and support of the roads these vehicles drive upon?

Yes.
It is frustrating knowing that a gas tax increase would result in better roads and more efficient vehicles, and that we have no chance of passing a gas tax increase anytime soon.
A friend of mine told me that he can see where I am coming from in my desire for smaller efficient vehicles...... But that's not "American".
"American" is big trucks and muscle cars in his opinion...
Don't forget that gm is or has closed all but 1 large SUV plants except for 1. It's no surprise that the last plant will be busy.
john-
that's a good point, but it isn't just large SUVs. full-sized trucks, for instance, are still a key segment for GM and Ford.
gm has been trying to hybridize these vehicles for a few years now, without much success. i doubt plug-in technology will be a game changer here.
i'd just like to see some serious, long term thinking about how America moves forward with such vehicles.
