2010: An "ominous" year ahead for gas prices?
Ring in the new gas pricesLast year gas prices were almost a $1 lower than today, and by this weekend, gasoline prices could be at their highest point since 2008, along with diesel and home heating oil.
Analyst Peter Beutel of Cameron Hanover calls the move up an "ominous sign for the year ahead."
Might be a good time for potential hybrid consumers to make a visit to their dealership. If gas prices keep rising, so will demand for hybrid cars. Thus, today's hybrid deals might be the best deals of the year.

I think it's time fuel prices went through the roof in this country. People need to start paying for the real cost of life to get a taste of how the rest of the world lives.
It'll be a humbling experience and perhaps instead of trying to bomb everyone into submission, we'll actually work with them.
Out of this will come much delayed innovation and technology that has, in my opinion, purposefully been held back.
As long as I keep my good paying job, (and maybe a little longer), I do hope prices shoot up to where they really should be. Man that would be a great catalyst for forcing some change on this country that will reap benefits for all.
We may find out in the next year or so if Peak Oil really has been reached, or if 2008 was just another bubble.
It appeared in 2008 that global oil demand was the same or higher than global oil production capability.
We were spared by a drop in demand caused by the global recession, so we did not find out for sure if we had reached Peak Oil.
The real question is whether demand will return to and exceed 2008 levels. If so we will definitely put the Peak Oil theory to test.
however, there are a lot of people now days who do not have good paying jobs... and others with no jobs so I don't think too many folks are going to be looking to buy new cars - fuel efficient or not.
People who get pinched by higher gas prices are going to find ways to reduce consumption without having to buy a new car...IMHO.
no doubt a big surge in gas prices might be too much to handle in today's economy.
still, it is an issue that will, at least i believe, be unavoidable at some point in time. and the more proactive we are, the better the chances of not just surviving, but even profiting from this inevitable and eventual reality.
is EI notes there could be great "benefits for all".
