Later, I learned that this was the first major marketing outreach that GM has done outside of Michigan since bankruptcy. Ultimately, GM had sessions all day long so that each session could be more personal.
Wouldn't it be a better idea to start selling in an area with fewer hybrid sales? The backlash will be larger selling to people who have already gone through a few generations of Hybrids. I recall that Toyota started selling the Prius in Japan, they started with a few hundred to fleet buyers the first year, then 1000 or so the next. That's how bugs get worked out.
That's a good point, John. Ultimately, GM isn't going to be selling that many Volts in California first, and I don't think GM will sell that many Volts the entire first full year of production.
This is more about perception. California is considered the leading green state, at least in the context of the automobile, and it's probably the most important auto market.
