“Betting on Science – Disruptive Technologies in Transport Fuels” is a new Accenture report that covers 12 technologies with the potential to disrupt transport fuels supply, demand and GHG emissions over the next 10 years.
Comparing advances in combustion engines, biofuels, electrification and other technologies, Accenture finds that science offers many options to disrupt the transport industry, but I'm going to focus on my big take away.
Hybrids and plug-in hybrid cars should be a core focal point.
Not only are plug-in hybrids more cost-effective than EVs in the short term, but they have the ability to utilize many of Accenture's other top disruptive technologies - namely numerous alternative fuels. Likewise, I'd add the importance of today's hybrid cars. For instance, the Toyota Prius can utilize the same alternative fuels as tomorrow's plug-in hybrids, while increasing efficiency today and developing tomorrow's plug-in batteries.
Nonetheless, the report concludes that no one technology is going to completely disrupt and change the transport sector in the short term, and almost every path faces considerable obstacles. Thus, any low lying fruit, such as improvements in the internal combustion engine, should be utilized.
