New poll: Most want to be green, as long as it's cheap

People want to do green things, like buying hybrid cars, but only if it doesn't cost much.May the most green vehicle win?

Perhaps you've seen the new Chevy Silverado hybrid commercial on TV? May the best truck win. And, in terms of overall performance, the Silverado hybrid is the best truck on the market thanks to its class-leading fuel economy. Unfortunately, at almost $50,000, the Silverado is simply too expensive for most pick up consumers.

And that reality is reinforced by a new AP survey that finds while most Americans have strong environmental concerns, most won't act on those concerns unless it's easy, cheap and immediate.

Or if "not" being green becomes more expensive.....

Unfortunately, it's often too late in that circumstance.

And, usually, being green does offer pay back in the long term. Sadly, however, most consumers just don't care if payback isn't almost immediate.

True.

"Return on Investment" is never something the average American consumer has been comfortable with. This is more of a concept for investors and businesses.

But back to "not being green" having a higher cost.

"Green" was a hot topic around the water cooler in 2008, when gas was $4.00 per gallon.

All we need is a gasoline tax increase or another oil crisis and green will be "in vogue" once again.

One could happen sooner, the other will happen eventually....

Agreed. It's all about being proactive or reactive. Unfortunately, we've become an overly reactive culture.
