Trucks regaining hybrid and small car market share

Americans only embrace fuel economy when gas prices are high.Simply un-American?

According to Kelly Blue Book data, used small cars and hybrid vehicles have dropped in value as gas prices have declined.

On the other hand, truck values are up 23 percent, more than recovering their 18 percent value decline caused by last year's gas spike.

While the government continues to invest many billions of dollars into making the US auto industry more fuel efficient, isn't such an investment risky without also managing the future cost of fuel?

Q. - Which of the following would you be willing to spend more money on if the money was put toward long-term transportation improvements, such as expanding highway capacity or introducing high-speed rail, in your area?

35% Tolls managed by local or state govt
33% HOT lanes
20% Tolls managed privately
18% Congestion pricing
16% Increased gas tax
14% New user fees

for better or worse - in a Democracy - there is no King who will determine what is in the best interest of the people.

You'll have to figure out how to convince people that a higher gas tax is something they support.

Otherwise, continuing to dream about that benevolent dictator is probably not a realistic way to think how we go forward.

I'm looking at that POLL and what it tells me is NOT that people are unwilling to pay more for transportation - they are - by significant margins... but not through a gas tax.

(true enough, it's but one POLL and perhaps others show different).

But in the Washington Area - the plan is to do just that - toll the roads and use the money to build more light rail and fund transit.

so.. people are willing to pay for more transit and high speed rail - but they want to do it with tolls not taxes.

right?

I'm not sure how Europe was able to convince their folks to pay higher taxes, however, higher taxes over there did not result in more hybrid purchases either.

right?

You can directly measure the stupidity quotient of people by the price of vehicles on the KBB. Trucks leading the way to stupidity.

Oh I agree.. but we don't live in a country with a benign dictator.

We live in a country, where if you want change - you have to convince folks that what they are doing is stupid and so far.. that has not been accomplished.

We cannot force people to do what they don't want to do - at least not in a country where we hold regular elections.

that's the reality.

Agreed.

In a Democracy you have to sell the idea to the people in order to pass legislation.

The problem is that the airwaves are flooded with conservative talk shows convincing the un-educated that these are all "bad" ideas.

We'll never get sufficient public support with that going on.

This isn't a democracy. This is a place where people are sold ideas by bombarding them all day with thoughtless advertising, psychological control in the form of playing peoples' inadequacies and desires, and shoving down peoples' throats products and ideas they don't need but think they need.

Couple that with a brain-dead society who thinks they are smart, and you have a recipe for a mental midget nation that thinks they are smart, independent, and free.

We're given just enough to get by in terms of freedom and space....so we really don't have to complain...we just grumble and move on.

80% of their power from Nukes ... is there a future for plug-ins in France?

see they got all the things that we say we need to get folks to buy more hybrids and plug-ins but as far as I can tell...

even with their high gas taxes, and ample nuke power.. they apparently have little interest in these technologies..

or.. perhaps I'm not very informed about France and Europe on these things.
