Can another hybrid top Prius sales?
What would it take to dethrone the king? The Toyota Camry is far more popular than the Toyota Prius, yet the Camry hybrid has never come close to matching Prius sales. Why (and it's not just a supply issue)?
Is it simply the unique design of the Prius? The cheaper price? The greater fuel efficiency? All of the above?
Are small cars the only cost-effective platform for successful hybrid cars? For instance, could a unique hybrid truck or crossover compete? What about a unique Camry-sized hybrid?
What would it take to surpass the Prius?

The only thing that will top the Prius is some kind of plug-in.
Trucks, SUVs, etc and large sedans won't compete because the price is just too high for hybrid versions.
Thus, hybrids are really only a solution for small sedan and compact segment - where they have far less impact on fuel economy, sadly.
how come the Corolla does not get factored in here?
how do it's sales compare to Prius and Camry?
I always consider the Corolla and Camry as very similar but the Camry more upscale in features.
no?
i picked the camry because of its sales leadership and the fact that there is a camry hybrid.
Trucks and SUVS already top prius sales...
I think what sales Prii is the Toyota name and the fuel economy. It is very smart for Toyota to work to keep their name foremost in the market and not bring Lithium to early to the market. Who knows what will happen with Volts??
sure trucks top prius sales, so do many other vehicles.
i don't expect the prius to become the best selling vehicle in america, but it could be a regular top 10.
still, what would it take for another hybrid to outsell the prius?
would it have to be a truck?
while i agree that it was smart for toyota to stick with NiMH for now as Toyota claimed they would have had to raise Prius pricing if they went to lithium.
nonetheless, to me, this is america's opportunity, but i don't mean the volt.
i mean lithium-powerd fusion hybrids, for instance.
if lithium doesn't work in the auto, then hybrids are irrelevant to american automakers. thus, we should make lithium, not plug-in vehicles, america's key hybrid/ev focus.
