Smart: And hybrids are expensive?

The Smart ForTwo Highstyle is cost effective? Is it really that cute?

Are hybrid cars cost-effective? That depends, but compared to the new Smart ForTwo Highstyle, I'd say hybrids like the Toyota Prius are a fantastic deal.

According to reports, the ForTwo Highstyle will begin at $22,461 for the 71-hp version.

I guess at that cost, a hybrid version is out of the question.

I cannot agree more. Same thing for MINI. Though they are both slightly cheaper than Prius (not cheaper than Insight, however), their fuel efficiency is pretty lousy.

I mean if Toyota rolls out a well-styled 60+ mpg Yaris-derivative for under $16,000 that just might become my next favorite car, at least for central LA commuting.

By end of 2010, several major players will roll out their 'super mini's'. And SMART will be in trouble. Why ? Cause its transmission is a major weak point, not to mention long term quality questions. The SCION IQ will be lightyears ahead of SMART cars, both in technology and quality and I think overall value.
Toyota, Hyundai, Suzuki, and Honda will have their 'mini' cars all out and Ill bet you will be able to get any of them pretty loaded for drive out of under $18k on average...
SMART is cute but it will get creamed by the better values overall from its competitors.

LB,

That's the thing with nostalgia cars. They have a premium price.

The new Volkswagon Beetle was a high-price vehicle that only "looked" like the original, and didn't even have a rear engine.

The new Camaro? Yikes!! Asking price is beteeen $29,000 and $53,000!!!!

These nostalgia cars never retain the spirit of the original.

The Mini is the same way. A high priced car that only "looks" like the original.....

In my humble opinion, a Smart Car is worth about $10k and not a penny more. The car is a rolling death box if you get into a 5 MPH accident or higher; considering the size and power of the vehicle, the fuel economy isn't that good; it takes 22 seconds to accelerate to highway speed, so you'd better hope that there's no traffic to merge into.

I think Toyota will to the "Smart" idea much better with the Scion iQ. If it's made like my xD, it'll be an awesome micro car.
