Study: Battery Swapping the key to electric cars
Bad news for the auto industry?A new study by the University of California at Berkeley finds that the key to electric vehicle success could be dependent upon the ability of electric car owners to swap their batteries. Under such a plan consumers might own their car, but not the battery, much like the idea behind Project Better Place.
I haven't been able to read the whole study yet, but I've been a big fan of Better Place's out of the box thinking. Nonetheless, it makes me wonder, is the entire established auto industry capable of surviving such a business model?

I sure hope that the auto industry can adapt to battery swapping. People aren't going to wait around for hours while their batter is re-charged. There are only two solutions as I see it. A. Battery Swapping. B. Batteries capable of extended trip capabilities, upwards up to and beyond 350 miles. Athough most daily driving is under 40-50 miles, people still want to be able to go on extended trips for vacations, holidays, etc. Hence, hybrids will be around for a while.
No doubt hybrids are going to be around a long time.
If battery swapping becomes the key to electrification, it seems the profit margins for automakers could become much slimmer.
Regardless, it's going to be very interesting to see how this plays out.
