How much noise should be added to hybrids and EVs?
Too quiet in EV mode? The Japanese government has launched a panel to determine whether a sound making device should be added to hybrid cars that run almost silent in EV mode.
Is this a good idea? Isn't the quietness of hybrids and EVs, overall, a good thing?
Nonetheless, what kind of sound should be used so as not to become overly annoying?

Either pipe the stereo outside or have an mp3 selection of various exotic engine sounds, something like how Mazda tried to mimic the MG's exhaust system with the original Miata. It would need to be a noise that is hard to confuse with being something other than a motor vehicle so that the person who hears the noise could react properly.
This is stupid...no sound is fine.
i like those ideas kp.
noz, i want to agree with you, but i do think that blind people do have a legitimate gripe.
Futuristic cars depicted in movies sometimes had a faint whine like a turbine or a jet engine. Where I grew up in Hamilton Ontario Canada, we had electric trolley buses in the 1970's that made this sound.
