Ford hybrid sales up 91 percent in June

Ford hybrid vehicles post impressive gains in sales compared to last year, but is the hybrid sales increase really as noteworthy as it seems? But, it's not quite as good as it sounds

Sales of Ford hybrid cars were up 91 percent in June compared to last June, largely thanks to the new Fusion hybrid. Then again, last year at this time, supplies of the Escape hybrid were so low that I'm not quite sure this number is as impressive as it sounds.

Overall in June, Ford sold 3,649 hybrid vehicles. For comparison, Toyota sold 16,744 hybrids.

Without doubt, this is a nice improvement for Ford's hybrid sales. Nonetheless, until Ford takes on the Prius, Ford will remain a minor hybrid player compared to Toyota.

I heard that because of this, they would increase the production of their vehicles...

How many Ford Execs does it take to understand that a family sized hybrid is not the MOST important segment right now in the USA ?
Its the COMPACT hybrid market. It would attract a strong young base of purchasers, as well as older who want great mileage and value to boot.
Yes your right Toyota has it right on, for now the rest are well behind the logic curve.

i totally agree with anon.

Ford has enough batteries ordered to produce 50,000 hybrids per year. at june's sales pace, they will have extra batteries, so why would they increase production? perhaps, they'll use more batteries for the fusion hybrid versus the escape hybrid, but the net result still is the same.

as anon points out, ford needs a prius contender. it needs a hybrid with a base price near $20,000, or even less if possible.

Why is there no vouchers for hybrids ?
Give $3000 for every hybrid Made in the USA Pay for it by a gas tax or a oil import tariff

Why does all of Europe still give major cash vouchers for hybrids but the 'world leader' can not effectively do so, and when it does, the credits go to zero within months after the car starts selling !
Oil companies, Iraq, Iran, the Saudis all just LOVE U.S. Senators and Reps!:( Corruption anyone ?

Then again, not everyone wants a compact car -- The fusion hybrid works for a lot of people. My sister bought one and loves it - I got a Mariner hybrid, because I need 4WD to get to my house in the winter. Toyota wouldn't work. My sister needs to haul around a massage table -Doesn't fit in a Toyota, by the way. And I'd rather help our economy by buying a Ford, which has more made in US parts than a Toyota.

the fusion hybrid is a great vehicle, but the far majority of consumers will still buy fusion over a fusion hybrid.

while i'd like to see ford take on the prius, i'd be very happy with any Ford hybrid-only model capable of achieving sales of around 100,000 units per year.

even if ford sells at a loss they'll make it up in buzz, store traffic and advertising potential.

There is a good eBook on the web, "Hybrid Vehicles and The Future Of Personal Transportation" - (Malestrom). It is just about Ford Hybrid and similar models. I advise you to read it, it's really worth it!
