Aerodynamics the new horsepower
As aerodynamic as it's going to getIt's aerodynamics, stupid.
Insideline reported yesterday that GM's lead Chevy Volt designer, Bob Boniface, has become a little offensive about the Volt's aerodynamics. While GM isn't releasing official aero figures, Boniface claims that many competitors, such as Tesla, are releasing phony numbers. Ultimately, Boniface claims the Volt will offer a coefficient drag similar to either the Roadster or the new Toyota Prius.
Thus, Insideline speculates that aero figures are the new horsepower wars, at least for those developing alternative technologies.
What do you think? Are aerodynamics the new horespower? Is this much ado about nothing, as the Volt is still more than a year from launch?

It is interesting how vehicles seem to be less aerodynamic than they were 10-15 years ago.
Exhibit 1. Box shaped vehicles like Scion.
Exhibit 2. The new muscle cars. They bring back the old look but also bring back the old aerodynamics......
Exhibit 3. Large trucks/ SUV's. With all that height and those large wheels, the aerodynamics are pathetic....
well none of the above vehicles were ever designed with great mileage or aerodynamic efficiencies dont think
however in 2010 all manufacturers will be more conscious of same.
There will always be a market for rich unconscious low self esteem people who must shout 'look at me!' and willing to spend 45k for big clunkers / but most thankfully will be moving with rest of planet towards more consciousness and greener cars and trucks(if thats possible?) :_)

The Volt has always been much ado about nothing. It's even less impressive not that Toyota has a revised Prius that gets 50 MPG. An aftermarket battery supplier can add PHEV to a Prious for less money than the Volt will cost brand-new (assuming it is ever made).
