Incentives for a Toyota Prius plant in the US?
Can protectionism save US auto jobs? For a few years Toyota has been toying around with the idea of a US plant to manufacture its red hot Toyota Prius. Unfortunately, the current recession crushed any such plan for the short term.
Would it be wise for the US government to help bring such a plant to the US, or should the government only protect US companies, or only just UAW workers?
Likewise, Nissan is now planning a US plant for electric vehicle and electric vehicle battery development, with a significant eye on US government help. Should they get it?
Are incentives for transplants to bring more manufacturing jobs to the US a good or bad idea?

If the Federal Government Poors all this money into US automakers, why not put money into foriegn car makers that also provide jobs? More Plants=More Jobs, even if it goes back to Japan. It would be excellant publicity, too.
"even if it goes back to Japan"
Today, many have claimed that US companies - not necessarily auto companies - play with the tax code in such a manipulative manner that many of these companies might as well reside outside of the US.
it seems to me that if the US offers a competitive advantage, it might actually be competition.
i agree that we should give incentives to all job creators, regardless of which country the company is incorporated.
Ha...in todays world even GM is virtually a 'foreign entity'! as MOST of its profits are from overseas....Toyota and Honda are as much 'home grown' as any 'US' corporation...taxwise and every other way
Toyota is bringing back a literal family member as President of same and he is shaking up corporate thinking big time.....what it means is they will stop trying to mimic the ( hundred billions in losses)'GM/Ford' mentality that 'bigger is better' for very large sized americans, and focus instead on being able to make a decent profit, with compact 4 door type HYBRIDS.....
It will be tough as they wont be able to tack on another 10k just because its a 'large pick up' ha, but you watch by 2010 they will be offering some very cool great priced HYBRIDS in just 8 months!
and toyota made that argument on Monday, telling shareholders that the company was going to increase its line of hybrid cars, in addition to cost cutting, to return to profitability.
