EV cost check: $47,000 for an i MiEv?

Will electric vehicles really be affordable in the next decade? It is clean and green though

During media days at the LA Auto show I spent a good bit of time sitting in the i MiEV, imaging myself as a driver and a passenger. Opening and shutting doors. Just really trying to get a feel for the vehicle. Ultimately, I assumed the reason for this car feeling so small and, I hate to say it, but cheap, was to help make this car more affordable.

Yet, today Mitsubishi has announced that the i MiEV is going on sale this year in Japan for $47,500. Isn't that wildly expensive for such a vehicle with only 100 mile range?

Moreover, it really makes me wonder how much the Chevy Volt is really going to cost at first. Somehow I think GM is banking on some funny accounting in order to sell the Volt at $40,000.

That is no surprise at all. I have seen the research saying that 25-50% of the vehicle cost is battery. Chevy Volt has the battery that is 2 times as small so that it could probably be about the same price (it has smaller battery, but it has a gasoline engine and generator).
On a positive note: every so often a new technology emerges it costs a lot. Then, the price goes down. We might expect $20,000 EVs in 5-10 years.

i don't know the battery size of the i MiEV, but i'm positive that the iMiEV is far smaller and lighter than the Volt. Moreover, the Volt is using twice as much battery as needed to help maintain cell integrity. So, in theory, the Volt has enough batteries for 80 miles.

Since the battery needs of the Volt are more intensive than the i MiEV, I'd assume that sweet spot range of the iMiEV doesn't require as much redundancy as the Volt.

So, I'm not sure that the Volt is only using half as much batteries as the i MiEV.

There is no way I'd ever pay $47k for an EV that "felt cheap" and only had a 100 mile range. Allegedly Ford is working on engineering a Focus EV closer to the $25k range. I'd give the latter a shot since the Focus is a real car.
