Subaru hybrid confirmed

Subaru hybrid vehicles coming in 2011 or 2012.Coming in 2012

For several years there have been rumors about a Subaru hybrid built on Toyota technology, as Toyota has a 16 percent stake in Subaru. Now those rumors are official, Subaru will offer a new hybrid in either 2011 or 2012.

Subaru hybrid vehicles? Sounds like a perfect fit.

Subarus legacy is outstanding. Its (standard) engine technology has always been awesome as has its reliablity. So why havent I bought one in the past ? Only one reason - its gas mileage just is terrible :(
I dont think I can wait till 2012 to get another car(hybrid) sorry to say as Im sure a combo of it being a subaru crossed with a full hybrid and WOW what a car it would be! And very expensive Im sure :(
So at end of 2010 Ill get a super cool compact full SLIGHTLY USED loaded hybrid and save Im thinking 7k or so :) boooohaaaaaa

Those are good points, but I still think a hybrid version is a good offering for many subaru fans.

It certainly is a good offering, but Subaru is taking a gamble by moving so slowly. By 2012 there will be other high mileage AWD drive options. If they had a higher mileage AWD Subie out now, there would be no competing models.

I own two Subarus, one Forrester and one WRX. I love the firm handling of the AWD (living in Minnesota, I won't consider a car without it anymore). I've been salivating for a hybrid AWD (and I do like the Subarus) ever since.

Given that "hybrid" basically just means "internal combustion engine paired with battery," I have to wonder if FHI/Subaru might combine the battery with AWD with - dare we think it - a turbo-diesel or other high efficiency engine.

I recently drove a 2009 Prius all over Yosemite, and was hugely impressed (45mph over THOSE hills? Yay frackin' team.) I am anxiously looking forward to a Subaru offering, and paired with the Toyota knowledge of the hybrid drivetrain, I hope for the best.

Maybe it's just me, but Subaru and hybrid sound like a perfect fit. I think I'm more excited about this car than I am the new Prius.
