Revving up anger: Nissan Altima hybrid problems
Love it or hate itI'm a big fan of hybrid cars, obviously. Still, I think it is very important to address hybrid vehicle problems.
Typically, most hybrid problems are not endemic to hybrids, per say, but shoddy manufacturing. Certainly, the weight of hybrid batteries coupled with low resistance tires has led to increased tire wire and decreased tire life for some hybrid owners. However, most hybrids, especially those built on second generation technology, have performed exceptionally reliably.
Nonetheless, the Nissan Altima hybrid continues to surface as one hybrid that causes more problems than would seem normal. Revving, poor battery charging cycles, etc. continue to pop up.
Today, an unhappy Altima hybrid owner complained about his Altima hybrid lemon. Dead battery, revving, engine replacements and poor dealer servicing - many of the normal Altima hybrid suspects.
Why? Other Altima hybrid owners have been extremely happy with their hybrids, but the significant percentage of Altima hybrid owners with complaints seems to demonstrate that Nissan failed its Altima hybrid Q&A program - if it actually had one.
While it's bad enough that Nissan half-assed their Altima hybrid efforts, the dealer servicing complaints coupled with these problems are completely unacceptable. Perhaps not so ironically, Nissan has been a pooh-pooher of hybrids, but if Nissan cannot make consistently reliable hybrids, why should anyone believe they can make reliable electric vehicles?

I've owned my Nissan Altima for 2 years and 61k miles. Absolutely no Hybrid problems at all. My son also has had one for the same time and 57k miles with no hybrid issues. The only issue I have with the dealer is how they try to overprice any services on the car including oil changes. I go to third parties for oil changes and do some of the maintainance myself.
With 60K per year (I do only 14K) oil changes should be an issue. How much are you charged for an oil change?
With 30k per year sorry. Still, twice as much oil changes (>= 6 per year).
paul-
and there are many other altima hybrid owners just like you. still, the amount of complaints i've received alone indicate that there are too many bugs in nissan's manufacturing process.
certainly, considering this is nissan's first generation of hybrids, built using another automaker's technology, some bugs are to be expected. unfortunately, it seems the problem could be a bit bigger than that.
even worse, however, nissan's dealers are really dropping the ball, it seems to me, in managing these issues. if dealers were better handling these problems, I wouldn't be hearing about them. and that's just unacceptable in my opinion.
I read a lot about cars and over last 10 years Nissan CARS have just had too many problems for me to ever purchase one. Their TRUCKS on other hand are wonderful but who wants 16 MPG average any more, espec with expected 3.oo gallon gas this winter and going higher and higher over time???
So I stick with TOYOTA, HONDA, HYUNDAI/KIA ONLY as new car options..
and frankly if you want to save a BUNDLE just purchase any of the those brands -- ONE year old FULLY loaded with sun roof, heated seats and more, with low miles one owner and SAVE ABOUT $7K too boot!(ie purchase 1 year old 2010 loaded hybrid in 2011 and save ton as well!) I love slightly used fully loaded Asian vehicles! What a steal they are :) / I cut my payments down 2-3 years just doing that and they will last 11 years with NO probs ever(above 4 brands that is).

Of course, Nissan is implementing a hybrid system they didn't build or design. Of course there will be bugs!
Ford also used much of Toyota's HSD on the Escape hybrid without as many problems. Of course, Ford had developed much of its hybrid technology independently of Toyota, but Toyota patented much of the technology before Ford. So a Ford to Nissan comparison in terms of hybrids isn't exactly apples to apples.
I own a 2008 Nissan Hybrid with approx. 14K miles. I have had problems with poor battery cycles and poor fuel econ. I took it into service (engine code light came on) and found out there was a problem with a fuel vapor recirc vent.
One dealer was unable to fix it and I had to it take to another. Very poor service on the Hybrid models. Also interior is not on par with Toyota's build quality is inferior. I do not think I will buy another Nissan product.
