Insight versus Prius: Commercials
The hybrid for all of usAs I was watching the Lakers go down last night, commercials for both the Honda Insight and the new 2010 Toyota Prius aired within just a few minutes of each other.
I don't really like either commercial, but if I had to pick a winner, it would easily be the Prius commercial. Still, neither of these commercials entices much in terms of sizzle or steak.
Perhaps these commercials resonate well with those already contemplating a hybrid vehicle purchase, but I seriously doubt either commercial will help convert new buyers towards these excellent hybrid vehicles. Obviously, both commercials are skewed towards the stereotypical treehugging crowd, but isn't there also an opportunity for marketing these vehicles to those concerned about energy independence? Or is that too much of a stretch for foreign automakers?

Honda commercials are boring usually. The one at the beach where everyone has one its not even funny or cute. I agree Hondas real first step to compete closely with Prius is admirable, however
everyone knows the Prius was 95% rebuilt from ground up for 2010, gets much better mileage, and has significantly bigger engine to boot - So I ask - If you REALLY have to sweat about 2k, then guys you cant afford a new car at all(Or if 2k over 12 years of ownership is not worth extra 10 MPG average).
If you can spend small % more and if you still love hondas 2k 'less' deal, you could pretend your going in to a Honda dealer and get a MUCH better value overall for your money Prius III.
You will never regret having NO cruise control for 10 years+ on the smaller Honda, nor the lack of frwy entrance power of Honda, nor tiny backseat of Honda...and you will recover that extra 2k if you resell or just want 10MPG better for 12 years or so!(and I own a tiny Scion XB ha but will switch in 2011 to PLUG IN (smaller) Toyota or perhaps Honda Fit plug in at that time).
I agree that it's hard to argue against the Prius in this comparison. Of course, we'll have to see how dealer shenanigans play out.
