Cash for clunkers joke moving forward

Cash for clunkers to push more into hybrid cars? Not!A good reason to buy a hybrid? Not!

So, you've got an old '97 Chevy Tahoe that you want to unload, but no one will buy the old 4-wheel drive clunker as it only averages 13 mpg.

No worries. The government will take it off your hand for $3,500 if you buy a new Chevy Tahoe 2-wheel drive that averages a whopping 16 mpg under the new cash for clunkers bill, according to the DetroitNews.

If you have an old truck that achieves less than 18 mpg, the government will give you $3,500 if you buy a new truck that achieves just 2 mpg more than your old truck. Fortunately, passenger cars require an improvement of 4 mpg to qualify.

Did I really say "fortunately"? LOL.

You've got to be kidding me. This is beyond stupid.

2 mpg? Uh, no.

Rep. John Dingell said in a written statement that the deal would limit the incentives to buyers trading in cars that got 18 mpg or less, with an escalating cash reward depending on mileage of the new vehicle. Are you sure? It all sounds like 18mpg-doers won't get 3.5 thousand.

On a second thought, from some other newspaper:
The amount of the voucher will range from $3,500 to $4,500, depending upon the fuel efficiency of the new vehicle. That really looks like you still qualify if you get >= 18mpg. Since when 18 mpg is fuel efficient???
PS: still waiting for other detail, don't believe it can be that stupid.

There is an Obama look-a-like selling Kia's in TV adds. Now the real one will be on infomercials selling Chevy's. That's what happens when the Government has to sell cars.

It takes a lot of energy to make a new car. The extra mileage won't make up for it.

Has anyone ever considered the capital destruction this kind of program causes? Buy a $1000 asset for $3000 and destroy what remains.

It takes a lot of energy to make a new car. The extra mileage won't make up for it. It is a moot and unproven point. Additionally, gas guzzlers tends to consume a lot of electricity already at production stage. Simply, because they use much more materials. The incentive is mainly to switch to smaller, not hybrid, cars.

This is insanely stupid and has nothing to do with reducing energy waste. You incent people to trade in their old, perfectly functional vehicles, for new ones - nevermind that 1/4 of a car's energy is consumed during production - an improvement of just 2 or 4 MPGs is like taking a step backwards. Why not incent people to sell their trucks to buy fuel efficient cars that are more than 34 MPGs - then you'd have some impact!

I can see it now...the same douchebags who are crying for housing bailouts will use this to get themselves a shiny new 8 passenger SUV with a 2MPG improvement.

Americans need to rude wake up call and soon. It's time people in this country got their nads crushed to learn a lesson in humility.

JOHNM...it'll take ALOT more energy to run a fuel inefficient vehicle than to make a small, efficient car and run that instead.

Rep. John Dingell, Dinosaur-Detroit, this smells just like you. Shameful.

thanks for finding the quote, LB. I was sure his name would come up in association with this joke.

I think dingell was one of the primary authors. Of course, that certainly shouldn't be surprising. Still, at least he has to be close to retirement.
