20 percent hybrid by 2020?
Ford better get ready to increase its hybrid productionIn just a few years, shoppers of Honda hybrid cars will face a tough decision.
Should they buy the cheapest and smallest Honda hybrid, the Fit or the larger Honda Insight? Or, for those not interested in hatchbacks and desiring a little more passenger space, the Civic hybrid might be better . Then again, maybe some Honda hybrid consumers won't care about size, but instead prefer something sporty like the CR-Z sports hybrid.
So, why is Honda going hybrid crazy? Well, perhaps they've seen JP Morgan's latest hybrid prediction. By 2020, according to JP, hybrid sales in the US will reach 19.4 percent of the new car market.
Shoot. If gas prices pull another 2008 in the next few years, I'd say that JP is underestimating the hybrid market. In fact, the way that Honda is ramping up its hybrid efforts, I wouldn't be surprised if Honda was hybrid-only by 2020.
Now, US automakers, that's a whole other story.

With average unemployment hovering at around 9%, with home mortgage losses for banks larger this month than at ANY time prior, with the next tsunami being the tanking of the commercial real estate market, with GM and Chrysler virtually out of business for about a year, hundreds of thousand extra people unemployed in coming months - if all during this time, the price of Oil can still go UP??? and gas is now where I live $2.45 a gallon - bsed on intentionally shutting down refinery production and speculative manipulation by the 5% gazillion-aires - then YES I agree there is great promise for sales of Hybrids in near future!
I havent purchased a Ford in over 20 years but I have to say GO FORD and GO GM GREEN and mmm even Chysler ok..hehe...jk....
From the ashes of these times will come a massive purposeful redeployment of cash and manpower that will result in the creation of millions of GREEN JOBS to save our country and help heal our Planet :).
i sure hope you're right. i think, to an extent, we're moving in the right direction. nonetheless, this is going to be a bigger issue than the government alone can manage.
ultimately, i think it will come down to a significant percent of every day people standing up to do the right thing. to take responsibility. unfortunately, the studies i've seen don't seem to indicate that the people are yet ready for the challenge.
Dahc, if Toyota + Honda produce something 700 hundred thousand hybrids per year, most of whom are sold in US, then today about 3 percent of all new cars are hybrid. Already! Considering the rising gas prices, availability of cheaper hybrids, and, which is not less important, people not fearing to buy hybrid vehicles (most people still believe the battery might fail or else worse happen), 20% might be a conservative estimate. I think it is a lower bound estimate ;-)
I agree LB. I'd bet 20 percent is a sure thing, and you scale upwards from there based upon gas prices.

My next car will probably be the hybrid Fit. I love my current car (the Scion xD), so if I could get an affordable hybrid that was also a compact hatchback that would suit my needs just fine.
Of course, if Ford came out with an affordable hybrid (perhaps something based on the Focus or Fiesta), I would go that route since it would be an American product and Ford does make cars that don't fall apart at 36k miles -- unlike GM/Chrysler.
the possibility of a focus hybrid has been tossed around at Ford for some time. recently ford has seemed to indicate that the focus will come in an EV version. does that mean a hybrid version is off the table now? i hope not. unfortunately, last i heard ford isn't planning any new hybrids until the 2012 model year, so that means we probably won't know anything until 2011.
I think 20 percent is pretty ambitious for 10 years from now. Just replacing 20% of the current fleet of cars might not happen.
