The $15,000 Honda Fit hybrid due next year?

Honda Fit hybrid coming in 2010 for less than $16,000. Will US automakers really be able to compete in a new automotive world dominated by hybrid vehicles? The rumors continue to swirl

A while back Honda announced that it would convert its Fit into a hybrid version, but Honda has never been very clear about when exactly such a vehicle would be offered. Rumors have indicated it could go on sale as early as late 2009 or as late as 2015.

The latest rumors, however, indicate that the Honda Fit hybrid will go on sale sometime in 2010 at a cost of just $15,800, and that the automaker hopes to sell 50,000 Fit hybrids per year.

Not so many decades ago, most in America claimed small Honda and Toyota cars would never take off in America. And this American arrogance and ignorance helped pushed the US auto industry to the precipice of liquidity. Today, Honda and Toyota are preparing to roll out - combined - over half a million small hybrid cars per year, and yet Detroit has neither a product offering nor a plan to compete with such vehicles.

In this repeat of history, however, the Big 3 aren't sitting atop the automotive world. This time they are either in or near bankruptcy. Will America really be able to compete?

With ANY options the Honda Fit hybrid wont roll out of the dealers lot for less than $19500 I promise you!
HOnda like Toyota only has 'packages' for sale, each costing around $1300 and in each package is only ONE thing you need/want - ha.....so expect a 19500k, then add TTL = total price for loan 21500.oo.
That means a used low miles nicely equipped Prius III - in 2010 - would be a much better deal for me - larger inside and out, much larger engine, pick up, and incredible MPG as well.
And the Honda hybrid fit for 3-5 months will sell like hotcakes making dealer markups even worse when adding up total price :(
Ok its good idea but when you weigh it all out, 'shiny and new' is not financially all the better a deal.

What you say is true. Still, this is very good for consumers. Its more choice and more competition.

Nonetheless, it's been hard finding a good price on a used Prius, at least in Southern California. Hopefully, all this extra supply and competition will loosen up used prices a bit.

Just like the Insight, you'll see these things marked up to mid to upper $20k....complete rip-off.

I'll believe it when I see it.

If that is true, Honda should introduce The hybrid Fit in India too. As it is Honda is launching the Honda Jazz(Fit) in India in June. They will gain more attention if they introduce a hybrid in the small car segment. Nobody has done that in India before.

The 2010 Insight was rumored to start at $18k but came out at $20k.

If the Fit hybrid came out for $17k, wouldn't that eat up the Insight sales?

Dennis -

It seems like it would. Plus, Honda is going to roll out a new generation of the Civic hybrid. Thus, it certainly seems like a lot of overlap. Still, if they can keep solid price points for each class, maybe there is something there. Small, medium and large.

It almost seems as if Honda is ramping up to the time that all small cars are hybrids.

I always said that Honda should have just come out with a hybrid Fit to begin with. This Insight was a stop-gap emergency approach to capture the Prius buyers...hence the reason why it looks so similar IMO.
