SAE: Cheap gas still a hurdle to efficient vehicles
The easiest path to green vehiclesOn the first day of the SAE World Congress, auto executives claimed the technology to achieve new CAFE requirements - 35 mpg - is available, but costly. Thus, without higher fuel prices, bringing hybrid and electric vehicles "into mass production at an affordable price could still take decades."

Geez...that's like the Mafia saying "protection isn't cheap."
Thanks.
I think the point is to send a message to Washington that you can increase CAFE, but without higher fuel prices, Congress is simply going to again and again bail out the big 3 because the costs of higher fuel economy won't be profitable to automakers.
one way or another somebody has to pay.
i know that seems so obvious, but for decades Congress has been ignoring this reality, and we the people have been going along because why complain when gas is cheap?
I honestly don't mind paying so long as I know my tax dollars are going to things like that and I have alternatives.
Right now, I know I'm getting completely ripped off. This government has been hiding the real costs of oil use and makes it look cheap compared to what the reality of other alternatives are.
We can't blame anyone but ourselves. Few give a shit...and they deserve what they get.
By the way Dach...fuel is not cheap...they just fk us on the back end and sell the fuel up front for a low price...it's all tricks.
oh, i know. it's all a huge game.
"and I have alternatives."....
That's the point of this article. With cheap gas, the alternatives will never arrive.
I support a gas tax increase to help fund and to provide incentives for alternative fuels, hybrids etc.....but I'm in the minority.
I read a survey on hybridcars.com. 67% of those surveyed said "no way" when asked about a gas tax increase. That's on a "Hybrid" web site.
Everyone wants hybrids, EV, etc., but no one wants to pay even one nickle more to help get there....
and study after study finds similar results.
you're exactly right, smurf, everybody wants hybrids and EVs, as long as they don't have to pay more up front for them.
obama has tried to be more transparent about funding for the war in Iraq.
maybe he'd support a program that supports more transparency about the costs of oil. for instance, start adding shipping lane security to the price of gasoline. that's not a new tax, its an actual cost.
honesty and transparency. that's what america voted in with obama. of course, obama knows most americans can't handle the truth.
It's all about money like everything else.
true, but job studies, for example, indicate that many workers believe that salary isn't everything. it's liking what you do, feeling you're contributing to something, etc. these things can make money a little less important.
somehow this humanistic thread needs to be woven into the auto culture.
