Is driving a Hummer a privilege, a right, or a crime?
Is responsibility a dirty word?Is driving any vehicle you want a god-given right? Today, MotorTrend is asking its readers, "Is driving a privilege or a right?"
Initially, I thought it was a privilege, but I've come to think it's a right that all qualified citizens are entitled. However, that right can be taken away if certain laws are broken because the safety of the people is more important than any individual's right to endanger other people.
Still, what about the kind of vehicle you drive? Should consumers have the right to drive any vehicle they want?
Don't we make speed limit laws, etc. for the benefit and safety of the community? Likewise, shouldn't the government make laws outlawing vehicles that endanger the safety of the people? Hence, if gas-guzzling threatens the national security of the US, does it not threaten the people of the US?

Dahc-
Calling gas-guzzling a crime is a stretch but I do believe a gas guzzler like the Hummer should be heavily taxed and the tax collected should be used toward green initiatives.
I don't disagree that calling gas guzzling a crime is a stretch, but no more of a stretch than calling it a right.
I also think the gas guzzler tax is an interesting idea.

Every time I see an angry, white, middle-aged man driving his Hummer like a weapon instead of like transport, I usually think "poor guy... His penis must be *really* small!"

LOL!
I propose that driving a large, powerful, gas guzzling vehicle is often a similar action to executives paying themselves bonuses while their failing business is receiving government subsidy. Both actions IMO are motivated by this strange American view that an action is justified solely by whether or not one has the power or authority to do so. When are we Americans going to stop selfishly consuming more than we need just so we can feel superior and powerful?
I don't know, but that's probably a critical question for determining the future success of America.
