Insight markups and Honda hybrid shopping
Is screwing the customer Insightful?Last week some Honda hybrid shoppers found deals that couldn't be refused on Civic hybrids, while shopping for Insight hybrids. For instance Civic hybrids $2,000 less than the best deal on an Insight hybrid.
However, part of the reason some found good deals on the Civic hybrid was because of dealer markups on the Honda Insight. At one Honda dealership markups were as high as $4500.
This weekend, I stopped by my local Honda dealer and found no dealer markups above MSRP, however, aftermarket leather packages were being added to the cost, pushing the MSRP of an Insight hybrid up an additional $2,000, a price that seemed a little high for aftermarket leather.
Nonetheless, the Insight was still a better deal than the Civic hybrid, although my dealer told me he could offer some pretty great deals on Civic hybrid leases. Obviously, shopping for a Honda hybrid varies from dealer to dealer.
In the next few weeks I'll be doing some more Honda hybrid shopping to see how much variance there is between dealers in terms of hybrid deals, with a particular focus on dealer add-ons and markups.

I say forget the Insight! Unless you absolutely cant wait for just 10 months ?? If you can there will be at least 4 super neat and I think better priced, cute loaded hybrids out then..so why worry ??
Just say NO to Insights charging 2400.oo for cruise control..and more and YES to a more fun, better equipped, better priced hybrids, coming to many dealers near you, from toyota to Hyundai, even Mitsubishi! :)
Even my Honda dealer told me that he thought there could be better deals on both the Insight and the Civic hybrid in another month or so.
I agree with the first Anon response.
When compared to the 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid, the only advantage the 2010 Honda Insight has is price, which disappears or reduced drastically with the $2400 or $4500 markup. With the TPH scheduled to hit the market this Fall and the price of gas at the $2.00 range, those greedy Honda dealers can keep their Insights.
I would never buy a car with a dealer markup. NEVER!
The Insight is the dumbest car Honda has made in a while. Honda makes good cars but once in a while, it does so really stupid things....one being this Insight.
All that hype, all the hoopla....and this is what they came up with?
Pathetic....and at a $4500 mark-up as I saw at a local dealer....truly stupid.
Well how about 58MPG on hwy in just 3 months time ?? How ? Toyota is branding its new tiny super cool looking revolutionary engineered car called the SCION IQ...fits 2 large adults and 1 kid or dog comfortably and comes with optional large NAV screen to boot! really cool looking. MID JUNE is start date for sales HERE :)
Its got lots power. Stripped will go for around 14k, loaded 18k or so....still with super hybrid type mileage and its head turning design, it should cause a stir on the streets, coming soon...check out pics on web still listed as TOYOTA IQ for now ha!!
I do like the Insight and i know its a good start for honda to reach younger people, but I think again, its best to wait for the announced HONDA FIT HYBRID coming in late 09 or early 10, should be blast to drive, cool exterior and will cost I have heard about 2k LESS than even Insight....
C'mon, Noz, I know you're a closet Insight lover. Just accept it! JK

I think the Scion is interesting, but what is its city mileage? Probably half its highway mileage. That's not horrible, but in city driving a hybrid like the Prius still blows this vehicle away.
Here's a really good article from Tom Whipple....
I agree with him 100% by the way...

I agree with most of that as well, although I think that gas prices could remain low enough long enough to really dupe Americans. Until the economy really gets rolling, which I think could be a number of years from happening, gas prices could easily stay below $3.00 per gallon.

I like the Insight quite a bit, and I want it for my next car. But I'll never pay more than a penny above MSRP no matter what car it is.
During the $4.25/gal fuel crunch, my old hybrid bit the dust. I got a Scion xD because all the dealers were up-charging hybrids at thousands above MSRP.
I'm with you Indigo. NEVER. I'd buy a scooter if I had to first. I think such dealers should be boycotted.
