Hyundai Blue-Will Plug-in hybrid confirmed
Coming in 2012Hyundai will bring a plug-in hybrid to market in 2012 that will be based closely off the pictured Blue Will concept.
According to reports, the Blue Will will use a 1.6 liter direct injection engine coupled with a 100 kw motor and Hyundai's lithium polymer batteries. Early testing suggests the plug-in hybrid will achieve 38 miles of pure EV power, 106 mpg when in plug-in hybrid mode, and 55 mpg in just hybrid mode.
While no pricing has been released, of course, Hyundai believes the car will be cost-effective as most development has been done in house.
In related news, Hyundai announced its upcoming Hyundai Sonata hybrid was coming in October of 2010.

If Hyundai wants to sell this car, they better rework it's nose. It looks hideous.
How can you not like that big smiley face? JK.
The final version won't look exactly like this concept, and as we learned from the Chevy Volt, sometimes the real world product looks very little like the original concept.
At this time I'm more worried about how well the powertrain works and what the final cost will be.

Smiley faces are fine but this one doen't look too appealing. The picture looks like it was taken using a wide or ultra wide angle lens, so the size of the nose may be exaggerated. But as it stands, from this picture, the body is grossly out of portion. Also, the ridges which run along the side of the body appears too busy for my taste. But I understand that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. What I like may not be someone else's cup of tea.
38 miles in EV mode is close to Volt's capability but it will come to market almost a year later.
Price wise - Hyundai is very good in under cutting the other car makers so I think that it will be priced slightly below the Volt.
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't defending the look of this car!!!! It is pretty ugly.
Yeah, I'm very interested to see Hyundai's pricing. Hyundai has been gaining a lot of ground in the last 10 years on the more established big boys via their pricing. If they can continue that with advanced powertrains.....wow!
If they change the nose, they will also have to change the name to something other than "Blue Whale".
Or they could leave the face as is and paint it like an orca. It'd be real killer then!

Concept cars always look flashier than the production version. To get 38 miles on battery and 55 MPG thereafter, you can bet money that the final iteration will have a front end that resembles a Prius/Insight/Volt. No other shape really works.
