CAFE loopholes to increase oil dependency? More gas tax proof?

We could implement a gas tax now and forever change America's energy policy.Just make it bigger?

So GM has a problem. New CAFE requirements will require that GM add hybrid technology to its Chevy Tahoe.

Good start, right? The Tahoe hybrid achieves much better fuel economy than the conventional Tahoe, especially in the city. Unfortunately, the added hybrid costs also suck out GM's profit margin, especially at today's gas prices.

Solution: Just make the conventional Tahoe bigger so it applies for a different class of fuel economy regulations and skip the hybrid version reports a scary article by BusinessWeek.

Hmmm. Waste tons of time and money creating complex, loopholed and ineffective legislation that swaps real costs for treasury bills owned by China, or initiate a simple, effective gas tax? And Congress wants to investigate credit swaps?

Will America ever witness a major politician that risks reelection to stand up for the right thing? It's so obvious that if global warming and foreign oil are real threats, that a gas tax could create an instant, transparent change better than any other method. And it can happen immediately.

That's change.

I'm not trying to call out Obama, but the lifers in Congress that sit on their millions pretending to help average Americans, when in truth, they really only help themselves and their special interests.

Why isn't John McCain or Diane Feinstein making this issue the ONLY issue right now? Losers, the lot of them.

It's human nature, it'll never change. The days of polititians even PRETENDING to care are dead and gone.

People are short-sighted. As long as their representatives and senators bring home the pork, they will vote to keep them in office. They can't look at the bigger picture and cast their votes base on issues that affect the country as a whole.

Sad to say, politicans will not change until voters change.

Dammit. I'm trying to add a thread of hope to this conversation, but I'm having a hard time.

I have seen many many presidents come and go....and this frail looking guy...who bucked the odds by millions to one, amazingly came to be our current President. He can juggle 5(Bush) catastrophes at ONCE with apparent ease. He remains relaxed, cordial, with laser like focus inside yet outside he excudes an air of openness and cooperative spirit I had only seen in remarkable humans like Eisenhower and Roosevelt....
Can anyone really imagine McCain and Palin trying to handle even one of the many world shaking events happening now and in a way that respects other cultures, people, and the planet?? ha they would have taken us to ruination by catering to Oil, Gas and Defense (wasteful and short sided) spending (of which about 35% is pure kickbacks and fraud).
He knows that Humans are at a decisive crisis crossroads in that they can choose past destructive habits that result in greater division, chaos, global warming, woman who are treated en masse like cattle and can literally be traded, raped, killed with impunity..a planet where 1/3 of the its inhabitants are starving and choosing radical ideology just because they are given "hope", a warm meal and a place to sleep at night, if they only agree to kill others in the name of their leaders 'god'.
I am white middle class guy who thanks the Universe for ever additional are given a world leader with such energy, focus and absolute commitment to making this world safe long term for our kids worldwide.
From space Earth is truly spectacular...its oceans of blue glisten and its clouds reflect the light of its warming sun. Its a tiny fragile blue 'diamond' in this part of the galaxy. I am grateful the Universe heard humanities call to help the planet heal.
We needed and received someone special and the Universe allowed us to experience a '2nd last chance' as a species.....thank God for his visions and plans...a cooperative world, where peace as a planet is possible over time...where respect and helping all in order that we all 'win' in long run is the key; where empowering the average human can create dramatic changes...its happening now...every hour of every day...slowly the sun is shining down on humanity for another try at survival. Yes i have to say i have my serious doubts humans will survive this time around Im sorry to say, but at least lets give him a chance to heal our Planet one step at a time. Who knows in 20 years we may all still be here :)

Well, the CAFE loopholes have very little do with Obama. My worry is that Obama's cap and trade program will have little effect on autos in the next decade, instead, autos will largely be influenced by CAFE and its loopholes.

A gas tax would be instant and dramatic. Sure it would hurt a little in the short term, but it would change personal transportation, fundamentally, forever and it will be set in motion today.

Nonetheless, if its cap and trade or nothing, i'll absolutely support cap and trade.
