UN to tax oil for green investments

A UN gas tax?A "Green New Deal"

Adam Steiner, Head of the UN Environmental Program, thinks it time for a green tax on oil to raise money to "revive the economy and protect the environment, according to Reuters. The funds raised, some $750 billion, would be used for "improved energy efficiency for buildings and solar or wind power to create jobs, curb poverty and fight climate change."

Absolutely not! No money for a corrupt organization.

Fair enough. Are you against the idea solely because of the UN connection?

No. The last thing you want to do right now is increase costs on a weak economy.

And if alternative fuels were such a great idea, why haven't the European countries started using them in a big way. After all, they tax Oil much much more?

Good points.

However, Europeans, in general, drive much smaller vehicles than in the US, and they use much more public transportation - which was at least partially funded by higher gas and diesel taxes.

And, while I hear your economic argument, I still cannot help but wonder how we continue to justify the hundreds of billions we spend on foreign oil every year - which does not include any war costs.

Somehow, I believe, we have to stop that madness, and I don't see how it can come without higher fuel costs.

Nonetheless, I don't support the UN tax.

Agree on the imported oil issue. However, what we need right now is to let the oil companies drill for oil right herein the US! It would create many needed jobs and tax revenue.

That would decrease the amount of imported oil. And for some reason, we keep over looking nuclear power. Something that France uses to generate 80% of their electricity!

Finally, there is coal. Again a great way to reduce oil imports.

If we are ever to truly move away imported oil, the above needs to be looked seriously. We will never have enough electrical generation without the above to move towards a Chevy Volt like car.

But taxes are not the answer. It is just another excuse for more tax revenue to a Federal govt that is totally out of control. We need cheaper and more plentiful energy. Not artificially more expense energy,

I still favor a gas tax to an extent, but I also think we should use more domestic resources.

I'm not a huge fan of new drilling, but I could swallow it if it were part of a comprehensive program - I think most Americans could. However, it seems we live in a country where the fringe on the left and right endlessly battle each other while the rest of America - the reasonable people - get screwed.

Oil wells that were drilled during the Bush years are now idle because at current oil prices there is no profit. Who would drill new wells now? Check out this article:

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!

If our own government wants to tax oil, and the money stays in our treasury then so be it. We can have a discussion of the upside and downside. But this is a non starter.

TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!!

The day they tell me to pay txes to the UN is the day I...

I actually decline to finish that statement. I don't want to write what i am thinking.
