Nissan getting real with luxury hybrids?

Nissan will offer its own hybrid drive by 2010 in a new Infinit hybrid, as well as a number of other luxury and sporty hybrid cars.Nissan's first proprietary hybrid?

According to reports Nissan will roll out its new hybrid drive by 2010 in an Infiniti vehicle, probably the M. Nissan also plans to roll out its new hybrid drive in a number of luxury and sport vehicles.

Nissan's new hybrid drive is said to be bigger than the drive that Nissan currently leases from Toyota for the Altima hybrid. Additionally, the new drive will come with a lithium-ion battery instead of the NiMH batteries powering both the Altima hybrid and Toyota's hybrid vehicles.

Certainly glad to see Nissan roll out its own hybrid drive, but I hope the new drive isn't only intended for luxury and sporty vehicles.

The auto industry is in dire straits. Profitability is key. Don't expect them to subsidize cheap hybrids much longer. Those drivetrains will go into cars that they can sell at a profit. Once production capacity is high enough and per-unit cost is driven down, it can go into more affordable models.

KP - Seems like Toyota is just about there now that their plans for smaller hybrids, like the Yaris and possibly even the Corolla, have been confirmed.

Still, Nissan, much like GM, has claimed that small, cheap hybrids are unnecessary as EVs will replace them.

Why is there a picture of an Infiniti when the article is about Nissan??

Ummm. Nissan owns Infiniti. It's Nissan's Luxury brand. Infiniti isn't developing the hybrid powertrain for Infiniti, Nissan is.
