Tax credits for guzzlers - Does it ever end?
One last dance on the Congressional gravy train?I've had a hard time not commenting on the plan, now part of the stimulus package before the Senate, to give consumers a tax credit for buying new cars. So, I'm just going to get it out of my chest.
Are you kidding me? Foreign-oil sucking, 911-causing, gas GUZZLERS?
This is change?
I say, F cars right now, unless we're talking a serious change, such as a plan to end foreign oil dependency by 2020. If not, just give Detroit enough money to stay above water for now. That's it. We'll sort it out later when there is time for a better plan.
Besides, if it doesn't kill you, it only makes you stronger, right?
I mean, really, if you wanna spend a trillion dollars today, there should only be one focal point: the real estate and the mortgage mess.
Isn't that the root of our problems in the first place? So, why focus on anything else right now?
Don't have any ideas?
Here's one. Since the banks screwed us on this thing in the first place, let's just force them to lower rates on ALL mortgages significantly, or something like that.
They owe us, right? Direct and simple. Transparent.
But tax credits for gas guzzlers? Excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom right now.

I'm really upset right now!!! They cut out public works but add in tax credits for cars?! I guess no one understands why I voted for Obama. I didn't vote for him to continue the failed policies of the last 8 years! Our country is falling apart due to this tax cut BS and now the minority party is going to make sure that nothing changes. I hope in 2010, we just vote all of them out so we can just start over!
Well, obviously, these are tough times, and it's a very difficult hand to play.
Still, when it comes to the auto industry I want aggressive change. Let's come up with some new bench marks, then maybe I could let this tax incentive slide for now, but until I see the bigger plan...
We're going to be giving automakers, their suppliers, and their finance divisions easily a 100 billion in in tax credits, cash, etc.
For what? Just to save jobs in an industry that hasn't been able to compete for decades?
Let's make it part of a more serious plan to attack foreign oil dependency and go green. A plan with well-defined goals. Even if its not a moonshot, we should have a serious, transparent goal.
Otherwise, we'll just find ourselves in a worse situation 10 years from now and wonder how it happened again.
What did you expect? Honestly? Until we realize and come to terms with the fact that the entire corporate industry, government, and financial industries are a bunch of crooks and charlatans, it'll be another day as usual.
This financial meltdown gave us a glimpse of what a bunch of fuckers these people are. Just a glimpse.
Look at the latest thing with that senator and his taxes. $140K in back taxes and the POS is still walking free....could we? And he had the audacity to try and hold a higher office.
Are people even awake in this country?
Noz-
Those are some harsh points, but what you say is true, I believe.
The entire political system of America is a sham.
By the lobbyists and for the lobbyists.
Wrong wrong wrong! This article is wrong!I am sick and tired of the "SPIN" in this country! The housing crisis was not the start of this mess! Enough already! Stop being a part of these lies and mis information! For cryin out loud you people are the stupid voices I remember in the seventies! It started with ENERGY!! All together now!! ENERGY yes ENERGY! In short just shut TFU for one minute and just imagine that you had to pay $7 a gallon for now on. Yes just stop and think of everything energy driven went to those prices. Propane is $25 to fill the barbaque. Your car costed $50 to just top off...starting to get it again? Think of last summer.....ya when gas was....well ya expensive! And what did you do when energy such as these listed went to these new pricing indexes? You what? Oh you cut back on spending....yes thats what most of us did. Some couldn't afford to PAY things like a morgage ya thats it....its coming back now isn't it! Remember way back two months ago? What was that again.....uh....drill baby drill? Wow seems like years ago doesn't it? Let the media keep putting spin on this and before you know it we'll call it a bump in gas prices in the 2006-07 years and all go back to Sububans and monster trucks and Hummers eh?STOP THE SPIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
