Imported battery and engine to power Volt
A few Volt lithium battery packsWhen the Chevy Volt hits the streets next year it will be powered by both imported batteries and and an imported engine according to the UAW.
GM does plan to eventually produce both the batteries and the engines in the US but, according to the latest reports, there are no concrete plans for when and how that happens. In fact, the new engine plant planned for Flint might even be put on hold indefinitely.
Likewise, there is no proof, for example, that GM can cost-effectively produce lithium batteries in the US.
At least the Volt will be assembled in the US.

[yawn] Pathetic.
Should we even pretend we can compete with today's Prius in maybe 5 years? The most crucial part of the vehicle can't even be done here.
Maybe GM should get involved with breeding horses to get a jump on the post-auto world. They'll need the 20 year head-start.
It's a bit ironic that the Volt is going to qualify for the top of the plug-in tax credit, yet the reason it qualifies - and the most important technology in the vehicle - is imported technology.
It would be really interesting if the supplier was BYD.
It's not BYD.
