Honda ready to challenge Toyota's hybrid crown?
The smartest hybrid yet?In a MSNBC article this morning, Dan Carney calls the Honda Insight the "best intersection yet of the plots for price, efficiency and practicality," at least in terms of hybrid cars.
And, ultimately, I have to agree. Yet, it's never that simple, is it?
I live in a congested, Northeast LA neighborhood. City fuel economy is really the only thing that matters to me, and I've learned that Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive is capable of much more than what the EPA predicts, especially, ironically, in the worst congestion imaginable - exactly the kind of traffic many of us Angelenos know all too well.
Nonetheless, I've always thought that Toyota should strive to decrease the price of its hybrids, or least offer a very cheap hybrid model, and Toyota has talked about such an offering in various forms. Then the gas crisis hit and all bets were off.
Today, with gas prices and oil prices falling, the Toyota Prius doesn't seem like as much of a deal as it did several months ago, especially if you don't live in a congested neighborhood, such as mine. That makes the Insight seem like a much better deal, and, today, when all factors are considered, the Insight might be the best hybrid available or soon to be available.
Higher gas prices, however, could quickly change that advantage, as could many other factors.
Ultimately, I don't really care which is the best hybrid today, I only care that, finally, there is real competition heating up in the hybrid space. Even more important, the competition isn't being driven only by fuel economy, but also pricing.

Maybe as far as performance goes, but not as far as looks goes.
I think the new Insight is absolutely hideous. They took the concept and fucked it up royally. At some angles, it looks so disproportionate that I want to hurl...honestly.
In this day and age to put out something like that when they make much nicer ares like the Civic or Fit, I'm so disappointed in Honda.
Not to mention the new Prius, while not fantastic looking, looks like a sports car compared to this granny-mobile.
I was going to plant to buy an Insight...not anymore. I'll wait for the new Prius. If that doesn't work out, I'll wait for something else.
I've been waiting and waiting and waiting...and one disappointment after the other. Either nothing suitable exists, or whatever they do bring out is crap.
Sad.
The new Insight may not be perfect, but it's another choice, and that's a good thing.
Perfect is the enemy of good.
There's all these supposed environmentalists who complain instead of acting. The only way you'll ever get your perfect car is by supporting what's available now! (with your wallet, not your keyboard).
Delaying your purchase while you keep driving your gas guzzler (or efficienty but very polluting old economobile) is just hurting the overall cause. Car companies that see people buying hybrids will keep working in that direction. If you hold out, the car companies will tell their cutting edge engineers to take a hike because people aren't buying the new clean technology, and everybody loses.
(And as far as looks go, there will always be people who find new designs ulgy and old designs boring. But for the most part it evens out. Lots of people said the Prius was the ugliest car ever, and yet it's quite popular.
I disagree....it'll push the auto manufacturers to design better looking, more appropriate cars. Popularity has not relationship to looks. As can be witness by the hideous SUVs and some hideous hybrids.
By the way, what do you plan on doing with your old car?
indigo incarnates
Well, I don't see this car challenging the Prius. The Insight is a different kind of hybrid than the Prius. I see the Insight as an entry point for people who wouldn't ordinarily buy a hybrid or be able to afford one.
but, indigo, don't you think that the customer segment you reference for the Insight could be bigger than Prius consumers?
if gas prices stay relatively low and the economy weak, i think the Insight might have an advantage over the prius. and it all boils down to costs.
